Building Bridges

How We Reflect God’s Beauty, Complexity, and Value

Have you ever thought of yourself as a living symbol of God? It’s a humbling and inspiring idea. The story of the Mexican Indian community in Larry Rankins’ account reminds us of the transformational power of purpose. These people, once marginalized and overlooked, found dignity and pride through a simple but powerful act—building a bridge. That bridge became more than a functional structure; it became a symbol of their worth and potential. And here’s the thing—God calls each of us to be a bridge in the lives of others.

As I reflect on the parallels between their story and Exodus 37, I’m reminded of how God uses symbols, both inanimate and human, to reveal His character to the world. The tabernacle, described in stunning detail, was filled with articles that weren’t just functional; they were beautiful, intricate, and valuable. They reflected God’s glory and holiness. And just like those articles, you and I are designed to reflect God’s character in everything we do.

We Are Called to Reflect God’s Beauty

The tabernacle furnishings were covered in gold, polished to reflect every beam of light. They were symbols of God’s beauty, meant to inspire awe and reverence. As Christians, our lives are meant to shine in the same way. Think about the people you know who exude God’s love through their kindness, patience, and humility. That’s beauty in action.

First Timothy 1:5 tells us, “The goal of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith.” Love is what makes our lives beautiful. When we let go of bitterness, judgment, and selfishness, God’s beauty shines through us. Our actions become a testimony of His goodness, drawing others toward the bridge of faith.

We Are Designed to Be Unique and Complex

The golden lampstand in the tabernacle wasn’t a simple piece of decor. It was a masterpiece of intricate design, full of complex details that demonstrated God’s creativity. In the same way, we are not cookie-cutter Christians. God created each of us with unique gifts, personalities, and ways to serve Him.

I think this is where we often struggle. We sometimes compare ourselves to others, wondering why we don’t sing like them, speak like them, or serve like them. But God’s plan is for the Church to be a diverse body, with each person playing a vital role. Romans 12:6 reminds us, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” Our differences aren’t obstacles—they’re opportunities to learn from each other and grow together.

We Are Incredibly Valuable

Gold covered the furnishings of the tabernacle because it was the most precious metal known at the time. But as valuable as gold was, it pales in comparison to the worth of a redeemed human being. God didn’t spare anything in bringing us into His family. He gave His own Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the ultimate price for our redemption.

It’s easy to forget how much we’re worth in God’s eyes. We get caught up in feelings of inadequacy or fear that we don’t measure up. But remember this: Jesus’ sacrifice wasn’t made for a “good enough” version of you. It was made for the real you, with all your flaws and failures. Knowing our value in Christ should inspire us to live with purpose, humility, and gratitude.

Living as a Symbol of God

Whether we realize it or not, we’re always representing God to the people around us. Our words, attitudes, and actions reflect Him—positively or negatively. This might feel like a heavy responsibility, but it’s also a tremendous privilege.

Being a symbol of God doesn’t mean being perfect; it means being authentic. It’s about showing humility, admitting when we’re wrong, and loving others as Christ loved us. Sometimes, the simplest acts of kindness can become the most powerful symbols of God’s love.

Quotable Wisdom

Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, put it beautifully: “Heretics are to be converted by an example of humility and other virtues far more readily than by any external display or verbal battles.” Isn’t that the truth? Humility, grace, and love speak louder than any argument ever could.
