As the Day Begins
Meditation
“Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.” — Proverbs 22:4
The world often tells us that riches, honor, and life come through ambition, competition, and self-assertion. Yet, Proverbs 22:4 turns this thinking on its head, reminding us that true blessing flows not from pride but from humility rooted in reverence for the Lord. Humility is not weakness, nor is it self-deprecation; rather, it is living with a proper view of ourselves before God. When we acknowledge His greatness and our dependence upon Him, our lives become aligned with His purposes. In that alignment, He promises us what the world cannot give—lasting riches, genuine honor, and abundant life.
Riches here need not always mean material wealth. They may come in the form of spiritual riches—peace, contentment, joy, and wisdom that cannot be bought or stolen. The honor spoken of is not the fleeting applause of men but the enduring recognition of God, who delights in those who walk humbly with Him. And the life promised is both abundant now and eternal to come. Each of these blessings grows as we walk in humility, acknowledging that all we have and all we are belongs to the Lord.
As you step into this new day, consider how humility might guide your choices and interactions. Will you approach others with a spirit of service rather than self-promotion? Will you seek God’s will in your decisions rather than leaning on your own understanding? Proverbs 22:4 reminds us that the way of humility is the way of true riches. As you walk humbly before the Lord today, you carry with you a treasure greater than gold—the abiding presence of the God who honors those who fear Him.
Triune Prayer
To the Father:
Heavenly Father, I come before You with gratitude for the gift of another day. You are the source of all wisdom, and in Your presence I learn the beauty of humility. Teach me to see myself as You see me—not inflated with pride, nor diminished in worth, but cherished as Your child. Help me to walk in reverence before You, remembering that every breath I take is sustained by Your hand. Guard me from the temptation to measure success by worldly standards, and let me find my riches in the peace and joy that come from knowing You.
To the Son:
Lord Jesus, You are the perfect example of humility, for You left the glory of heaven to walk among us, taking the form of a servant. You humbled Yourself even unto death on the cross so that I might have life. Forgive me when I choose pride or self-sufficiency over dependence on You. Strengthen me today to follow in Your steps—serving others, speaking with kindness, and living with grace. Let my life reflect the honor You deserve, and may those around me see in me a heart shaped by Your humility.
To the Holy Spirit:
Holy Spirit, fill me with Your presence and guide me in the path of humility. Whisper to my heart when pride begins to creep in, and lead me back to the posture of surrender. Empower me to seek the will of the Father above all else and to rely on the strength of the Son in every moment. Breathe into me the courage to trust, the patience to wait, and the wisdom to discern. As I go through this day, let humility become my song, my shield, and my testimony, so that others may be drawn not to me but to Christ who lives within me.
Thought for the Day
Humility is not about thinking less of yourself but about thinking of yourself less—and in doing so, discovering the riches, honor, and life God has promised.
Thank you for beginning your day in God’s presence. May you walk humbly before the Lord today, and may His riches of peace, His honor of love, and His gift of life overflow in all you do.
