When Service Becomes a Distraction

The following reflection is drawn from a classical daily devotion that millions of believers have trusted over the years—including me. It reminds us that even in faithful service, we can lose sight of the One we serve.

“Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, ‘Lord, don’t You care that my sister has left me to serve alone?’”
Luke 10:40

Sometimes we are so shocked when a seasoned servant of God confesses that he or she is struggling with belief and an awareness of God’s loving care. We find ourselves thinking, “You of all people! You are such a wonderful servant of God. How can you doubt for a moment how much He cares for you?”

Could it be that service itself has somehow distracted this person from abundant, life-giving intimacy with God? Christ’s love for us never changes. But we must not neglect to give Him ample time and opportunity to lavish us with the love He always feels for us.

  1. Oh my goodness, YES!!! Some services try so hard to get all the people in the room with their arms lifted, that they forget to touch our souls. When my soul is really being touched, my arms are around my waist, with my hands clasped in prayer and submission. Love this! K.Kay
