Wicked Wealth

My prayers and reading this morning left a sour taste in my mouth. The psalmist recounted the agony of watching the wicked prosper and flaunt their success. No small feat for a king to be stung so. Was David recalling an earlier time when he was just the least of his brothers? Was he recounting the powerful of his court who crushed the weak? Or was he remembering the blessings he had been given, the success he had known and how at his own hand, he had robbed a man of his wife and his life?

I can look with righteous indignation upon the wicked wealthy but I cannot feel good about it. I have my own house to keep in order. I have my own sins of which to repent. Who have I oppressed? When have I flaunted my success? Where did I spend my blessings selfishly? No, I have more than a sour taste in my mouth. I think I have a splinter in my eye.
