A Proper Fear

Come, children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is the man who delights in life, loving a long life to enjoy what is good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful speech. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it (vv. 11-14).

I am to reject the lie that there is fulfillment outside the will of God. Reverence for the Lord is the only way to personal enrichment. From David, I learn that two big changes will occur in my life when I reverence God.

First, I will speak the truth. Deception comes easily and naturally for me. I never had to learn to lie. When I was a kid, I remember calling the operator just to say something rude and brash to her. When she called back, my dad answered the phone. He asked me if I had made the call. I lied. Even though it was easy to lie, deceiving my dad wasn’t wise.

As David says, if I commit myself to speaking the truth, I will have many good days and a long life.

Second, I will do good and pursue peace. The fringe benefits will be personal fulfillment and spiritual enrichment because my goals and behavior will be in harmony with the will of God.

Personal Prayer

Lord, teach me to speak the truth and to turn from evil. I can’t do it on my own, so empower me, that I may experience the fulfillment that comes from doing your will.
