Teach the Text…

The background of the text from Matthew 24:4-14 is known as the “Olivet Discourse,” which is a sermon given by Jesus to His disciples on the Mount of Olives. This discourse takes place shortly before His crucifixion, as Jesus responds to His disciples’ questions about the signs of His coming and the end of the age.

In this particular passage, Jesus is preparing His followers for the events that will unfold in the future. He warns them about the rise of false messiahs who will deceive many, emphasizing the importance of discernment and not being swayed by false teachings. Jesus foretells of wars, rumors of wars, nation rising against nation, and natural disasters like famines and earthquakes, indicating that these are signs that the end times are approaching.

Furthermore, Jesus informs His disciples that they will face persecution, hatred, and even death because of their association with Him. He predicts a time of apostasy, where some will turn away from the faith, betraying and hating one another. False prophets will also emerge, leading many astray with their deceitful teachings. Jesus highlights the increasing wickedness in the world and the danger of allowing love to grow cold.

The preceding paragraph (Matthew 24:1-3) sets the stage for the discourse. The disciples marvel at the grandeur of the temple and its buildings, prompting Jesus to prophesy about the temple’s destruction. He uses this as an opportunity to foretell future events, including the signs preceding His second coming and the end of the age. Jesus urges His disciples to pay attention and understand these signs.

The subsequent paragraph (Matthew 24:15-28) continues the discourse, focusing on the “abomination of desolation” and the tribulations that will occur. Jesus warns of false christs and false prophets who will perform signs and wonders, further emphasizing the need for discernment. He cautions His followers not to be led astray and assures them of His eventual return in glory.

Together, these paragraphs provide a comprehensive picture of the events that will unfold before the culmination of the age. Jesus prepares His disciples for the challenges they will face, encourages them to remain faithful despite persecution, and underscores the importance of staying vigilant, discerning, and rooted in the truth. The discourse serves as a call to endurance, unwavering faith, and spreading the gospel until the final coming of the Kingdom.

There are several other scriptures that provide further explanation or support for the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 24:4-14. These scriptures help to provide a broader understanding of the end times, signs of His coming, and the challenges faced by His followers. Here are a few examples:

  1. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12: This passage written by the apostle Paul addresses the coming of the “man of lawlessness” and the deception that will accompany it. It expands on the warning against false teachings and the apostasy mentioned in Matthew 24.
  2. Mark 13:5-23: Similar to Matthew 24, the parallel passage in Mark’s Gospel records Jesus’ teachings on the signs of the end times. It includes additional details and teachings, offering a more comprehensive understanding of the topic.
  3. Luke 21:5-28: In Luke’s Gospel, we find another account of Jesus’ teachings on the signs of the end times. This passage expands on some of the themes mentioned in Matthew 24 and provides further insights into the events that will precede His second coming.
  4. 1 Timothy 4:1-5: Paul’s letter to Timothy addresses the rise of false teachings and the departure from the faith in the latter times. It echoes the warnings of Jesus about false prophets and the need for discernment.
  5. Revelation: The entire book of Revelation provides a detailed prophetic account of the end times, including visions, symbols, and messages given to the apostle John. It offers a deeper understanding of the events and challenges that will occur before Christ’s return.

These scriptures, along with others found throughout the Bible, help to provide a more comprehensive picture of the teachings of Jesus regarding the end times, the signs of His coming, and the challenges His followers will face. They contribute to our understanding and reinforce the importance of being watchful, discerning, and faithful in the midst of the trials and deceptions of the last days.
