Before I Sleep…

In the hurried pace of life, it is easy to lose sight of the virtues that the Scriptures exhort us to embrace. The call to be completely humble and gentle, patient, bearing with one another in love, resounds with profound wisdom and divine guidance.

To be completely humble is to recognize our dependence on God, acknowledging that all we have and are is a gift from Him. It is an attitude that places others above ourselves, seeking their well-being and considering their needs with genuine compassion. Humility is not weakness but a strength that enables us to serve and love others selflessly.

To be gentle is to cultivate a spirit of kindness, tenderness, and restraint in our words and actions. It is the opposite of harshness, arrogance, and aggression. Gentleness allows us to interact with others in a way that respects their dignity, treating them with grace and understanding.

Patience is a virtue that challenges our human tendency for instant gratification and impatience. It requires us to endure through difficulties, delays, and the imperfections of others. Patience opens our hearts to the possibility of growth and transformation, allowing God’s timing to unfold in our lives and relationships.

Bearing with one another in love is a call to embrace forgiveness, understanding, and acceptance. It involves putting aside judgment and extending grace to those who may have hurt or disappointed us. It recognizes the inherent worth and value of every individual and the power of love to heal and restore broken relationships.

Evening Prayer:

Heavenly Father, As the day draws to a close, we come before You seeking Your presence and guidance. We humbly acknowledge our need for the virtues You have called us to embody. Grant us the grace to be completely humble and gentle, patient, and bearing with one another in love.

Father, we recognize that humility is a precious virtue that requires Your transformative work within us. Help us to surrender our pride and selfishness, allowing Your Spirit to shape us into vessels of humility. Teach us to serve others with genuine humility, considering their needs and valuing their worth.

Lord, in a world that often celebrates strength and aggression, grant us the ability to cultivate gentleness. Help us to speak and act with kindness, compassion, and respect. Soften our hearts, that our interactions may reflect Your gentle and loving nature.

Father, in moments of frustration and impatience, remind us of Your enduring patience toward us. Strengthen us to wait with hope and trust in Your perfect timing. Grant us patience in our relationships, enabling us to extend understanding and grace, even in the midst of challenges.

Lord, teach us to bear with one another in love. Help us to release any bitterness, resentment, or judgment that hinders our ability to love unconditionally. Grant us the wisdom to see others through Your eyes, recognizing their inherent value and offering forgiveness and reconciliation.

We thank You, Lord, for the power of Your Holy Spirit to transform our hearts and enable us to live out these virtues. May we be vessels of Your love and grace in this world, reflecting the beauty of Christ to those around us.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
