What Would Peter Say to the Church Today?

False Teaching

One of the things that makes 2 Peter and Jude so relevant to our contemporary situation is the fact that they address issues that the church still faces today. One in particular that comes out very strongly is dealing with false teaching.

Both 2 Peter and Jude are written to address and provide guidance on the prevalent issue of false teaching within local congregations. In our present-day society, the problem of false teaching continues to persist and challenge the integrity of our beliefs. It is crucial for us to recognize the significance of these biblical letters as they shed light on how to combat the ongoing presence of false teaching in our contemporary culture today. By studying these texts, we can gain valuable insights and equip ourselves with knowledge to discern and refute erroneous teachings that seek to undermine the truth. Ultimately, through understanding the wisdom and teachings found in 2 Peter and Jude, we can strengthen our faith and uphold the integrity of the gospel message in our local congregations and society at large.

One of the benefits of studying and reading carefully in 2 Peter and Jude is it helps us to understand, first of all, that false teaching is something we should expect. It’s not an anomaly. It’s something we need to be on the lookout for. We need to be constantly vigilant in paying attention to make sure we have a proper understanding of the gospel, that then enables us to recognize false teaching.

And it’s not just the doctrine of false teaching that we need to pay attention to; we need to pay attention to how false teachers live their lives and how their lifestyles give evidence to their departure from the gospel. Moreover, it is crucial to not only focus on the teachings of false doctrine but also to observe and scrutinize the conduct of these false teachers, as their actions serve as a clear manifestation of their deviation from the fundamental principles of the gospel. By closely examining the way in which they lead their lives, we can discern the stark contrast between their behaviors and the authentic message of the gospel. Their actions, therefore, offer substantial proof of their divergence from the truth.

Christ’s Return

Another key area where I feel like 2 Peter and Jude have something important to say to the contemporary church is that in 2 Peter, there’s a very clear and explicit effort to encourage believers about the seeming delay of Christ’s return. This delay may cause some confusion and doubt, but it is crucial to remember that God’s timing is perfect and His promises will be fulfilled. As followers of Christ, we should hold onto our faith and remain steadfast, knowing that even in times of uncertainty, God is in control, working all things together for the good of those who love Him. Let us be encouraged and find reassurance in the fact that the Lord is faithful and will fulfill His promises in due time. Keep seeking Him, fellow believers, and continue to trust in His steadfast love and faithfulness.

I think many Christians either live in a way that seems to indicate that they don’t think much about the return of Christ, or they really don’t expect it to happen anytime soon. And for some that can be really discouraging. For others, they can live as if it doesn’t really matter that Christ is returning.

One of the beauties of what 2 Peter does is it reminds us of the hope we have of Jesus returning for his people and ultimately consummating a new creation where righteousness dwells. And that gives us remarkable hope no matter what circumstances we’re facing as we live in this fallen world. This passage highlights the importance of keeping our faith strong and steadfast in the face of adversity. It serves as a reminder that no matter how challenging our circumstances may be, there is always hope in the promise of Jesus’ return. This hope sustains us, empowers us, and allows us to persevere in our journey through this fallen world. It is a source of comfort and encouragement as we await the fulfillment of God’s ultimate plan. Therefore, let us hold onto this remarkable hope, knowing that through Jesus, we can find strength, peace, and the assurance that righteousness will ultimately prevail.
