As the Day Begins

Matthew 6:16-18:

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Morning Meditation:

In the quiet moments of the morning, as the sun’s rays gently awaken the world, we reflect on the words of Christ regarding fasting. Fasting, a spiritual discipline often misunderstood, holds profound significance in our journey of faith. As we contemplate these verses, we are reminded not only of the importance of fasting but also of the sincerity and authenticity with which we approach it. Jesus warns against the ostentatious displays of piety exhibited by the hypocrites, emphasizing the necessity of humility and inner devotion. Our fasting is not for the approval of others but for the intimate communion with our Heavenly Father.

As we prepare to embark on our day, let us anoint our heads with oil and wash our faces, symbolizing a renewal of our inner selves. Just as the physical act of washing refreshes our bodies, may this ritual cleanse our spirits, purifying our intentions and aligning our hearts with God’s will. In the silence of the morning, let us seek the presence of the Divine, surrendering our desires and aspirations at His feet. Through fasting, may we draw closer to God, seeking His guidance, strength, and grace to navigate the challenges that lie ahead.

Prayer:

Almighty Father, as I embark on this new day, I humbly come before You in prayer. Teach me the true essence of fasting, that it may not be a mere outward display but a sincere expression of devotion from the depths of my heart. Grant me the wisdom to fast with authenticity, free from the desire for recognition or praise from others. May my fasting be a reflection of my earnest desire to draw closer to You, seeking Your presence above all else.

Lord, as I wash my face and anoint myself with lotion, may it serve as a symbolic gesture of purification and renewal. Wash away any impurities within me, both seen and unseen, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. May this act of physical cleansing remind me of the spiritual cleansing You offer, washing away sin and restoring me to Your likeness. Help me to approach fasting with a pure heart, seeking Your will and Your kingdom above all else.

Heavenly Father, in the secret place of fasting, may I find solace in Your presence. Strengthen me with Your grace, that I may endure the challenges of this day with faith and perseverance. As I fast, may it deepen my dependence on You and increase my sensitivity to Your voice. Let Your reward be my greatest motivation, knowing that You see what is done in secret and will honor those who seek You earnestly. Amen.

Thought for the Day: “In the secret place of fasting, our hearts are laid bare before God, and in His presence, we find the greatest reward.”
