As the Day Ends

“After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.'” — Luke 10:1-7

As we wind down our day and reflect on Luke 10:1-7, let’s consider the insights this passage offers. Jesus’ appointment of the seventy-two disciples speaks to the urgency and significance of His mission. He sends them out in pairs to prepare the way, illustrating the importance of community and partnership in the work of God. This passage reminds us that the harvest—the world in need of God’s love and truth—is vast, but the workers are few. As we prepare for rest, we are called to consider our own role in this mission. Are we ready to step out in faith, relying on God’s provision and spreading His peace?

Reflecting on the image of being sent like lambs among wolves can be unsettling. It evokes a sense of vulnerability and potential danger. Yet, Jesus’ instructions are filled with reassurance. He emphasizes dependence on God and the community’s hospitality, assuring that peace will find those who welcome it. This passage invites us to trust in God’s care, knowing that even in the face of challenges, His peace can prevail. As we contemplate these words tonight, let us embrace the comfort and courage they offer, finding rest in the assurance that we are part of God’s grand plan, and He is with us every step of the way.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
As I close this day, I reflect on the mission You have entrusted to us. Thank You for the privilege of being part of Your harvest field. I am reminded that the world is in great need of Your love and truth, and You have called each of us to be workers in this vast field. Help me to embrace this calling with faith and courage. Guide me to rely on Your provision and the support of the community around me. I ask for Your peace to rest upon my home and all those I encounter. May Your presence be felt in every interaction, bringing comfort and assurance. As I rest tonight, fill my heart with a renewed sense of purpose and readiness to serve You. Amen.

Lord Jesus,
I am humbled by Your example and Your words in Luke 10. You sent Your disciples out with a mission, and You continue to send us today. I am inspired by their obedience and trust in Your instructions. Help me to follow in their footsteps, stepping out in faith even when the path is uncertain. Remind me that I am never alone, for You are always with me, guiding and protecting. As I prepare to sleep, I surrender my worries and fears to You. Grant me the peace that surpasses all understanding, and let Your presence be my comfort and strength. May I wake up with a heart ready to share Your love and peace with those around me. Amen.

Holy Spirit,
I invite You to fill my heart and mind as I reflect on this day and the teachings of Jesus in Luke 10. Empower me to live out the mission You have given us with boldness and compassion. Help me to see the opportunities around me to share Your peace and love. Give me the wisdom to recognize the needs of those I encounter and the grace to respond with kindness and understanding. As I rest tonight, renew my spirit and prepare me for the work that lies ahead. Let Your presence be a source of comfort and inspiration, guiding me in all that I do. May Your peace dwell in my heart and home, bringing calm and rest. Amen.

Thought for the Night

As you drift into sleep, remember that you are part of God’s mission. You are sent out with His peace and protection, and He is with you always. Rest in the assurance that His presence will guide and sustain you through all challenges. Trust in His provision and embrace the peace He offers, knowing that you are never alone in His harvest field.
