A Reflection on Commitment and Wisdom
When Jesus spoke the words found in Luke 14:28-33, He wasn’t just giving us a lesson on practical decision-making; He was inviting us into a deeper understanding of what it means to follow Him. In these verses, Jesus uses two vivid examples—a builder who must calculate the cost before starting a tower and a king who must assess his resources before going to war. Both examples emphasize the importance of forethought, planning, and commitment. But beneath these practical illustrations lies a profound spiritual truth: discipleship requires us to count the cost and be willing to give up everything to follow Jesus.
The reality is, we live in a world where commitment can sometimes feel like a fleeting concept. We’re bombarded with choices, and it’s easy to make decisions based on what feels good at the moment without considering the long-term implications. But Jesus challenges us to take a different approach. He asks us to pause and truly consider what it means to be His disciple. Are we willing to lay down our own desires, ambitions, and comforts for the sake of following Him? The cost of discipleship isn’t something to be taken lightly—it’s an all-in commitment that demands our entire lives. Just like the builder who carefully calculates the cost before laying the foundation or the king who assesses his chances before going into battle, we too must sit down and count the cost of following Jesus. This isn’t about earning our salvation, but rather about understanding the depth of the commitment we’re making when we choose to follow Christ.
The wisdom found in these words of Jesus is echoed throughout the book of Proverbs, a treasure trove of distilled truths that guide us in our daily lives. Proverbs is a book that invites us to filter our decisions and actions through the lenses of wisdom and understanding. In a world that often values quick fixes and instant gratification, Proverbs encourages us to slow down, think critically, and make choices that align with God’s will.
One of the keys to living a life of wisdom is the ability to distill complex ideas into simple, actionable steps.
Just as Hemingway’s editor taught him to use short sentences and plain speech to become a better writer, the book of Proverbs teaches us to live wisely by offering us bite-sized pieces of God’s wisdom.
Amy Carmichael, a missionary who dedicated her life to serving others, understood this concept well. She developed a simple yet powerful tool for filtering her words and actions—a tool she called the “three sieves.”
Before she spoke, she would ask herself three questions: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?
This simple practice of reflection helped her to live a life of integrity and love, ensuring that her words and actions aligned with the wisdom of God. Imagine if we applied this same principle to our own lives—how different our conversations and interactions might be! By using these three sieves, we can begin to embody the wisdom of Proverbs in our daily lives, choosing our words carefully and living with intention.
The simplicity of the wisdom found in Proverbs, much like the distilled truths taught by Carmichael and Hemingway, is both its strength and its challenge. It calls us to slow down in a fast-paced world and to consider the weight of our words, actions, and commitments. It challenges us to prioritize what truly matters and to align our lives with God’s will. As we navigate the complexities of life, let’s remember that true wisdom isn’t found in grand gestures or complex philosophies but in the simple, consistent application of God’s truth in our daily lives. By counting the cost, filtering our words through the three sieves, and living out the distilled wisdom of Proverbs, we can walk in the path of true discipleship, fully committed to following Jesus.
So, as you go about your day, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the commitments you’ve made—both big and small. Are you counting the cost in your decisions? Are you filtering your words and actions through the lenses of truth, kindness, and necessity? And most importantly, are you aligning your life with the wisdom found in God’s Word? These simple yet insightful practices can help you to live a life of deeper purpose and intentionality, fully committed to the path of discipleship. As you do, may you experience the peace and fulfillment that comes from walking in wisdom and living out the truths of Scripture in your everyday life.
