Life and Death Are Not to Be Considered

Standing Firm in Faith

When I think of the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, I’m reminded of the kind of faith that refuses to waver, no matter the cost. These three men were given a clear choice: bow to the golden image or face the fiery furnace. But for them, the decision wasn’t really a decision at all. Life or death wasn’t something they weighed against their obedience to God. They didn’t stand around debating what to do or trying to negotiate a compromise. When temptation came knocking, they didn’t entertain it, they simply responded with a firm “no.” That’s an insight we can take to heart today: when faced with temptation, especially when it’s something clearly wrong, we don’t need to hesitate. Sometimes we make sin more complicated than it is, convincing ourselves there’s a gray area where there isn’t. If it’s against God’s will, it’s a no, plain and simple.

As believers, we can be tempted to justify our actions or to give in, especially when there are pressures all around us. Sometimes the temptation isn’t as obvious as a golden statue. It might be bowing to the opinions of others, giving in to gossip, or allowing fear to dictate our decisions. But the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego reminds us that there are no negotiations when it comes to righteousness. The moment we start debating with sin, we’ve already lost a little ground. I find it helpful to remember Jesus’ words to Satan during His own temptation: “Get behind me, Satan!” (Luke 4:8). He didn’t enter into discussion or contemplation; He responded with the truth of God’s Word. When we know in our hearts what is right, we don’t need to delay. Standing firm in our faith is a decision made in advance. When the temptation comes, our answer is ready.

The story of Stanley Soltau and Chinsoo Kim is another stirring example of standing firm no matter the cost. Chinsoo, like those Hebrew men in Babylon, was given an ultimatum: bow to the goddess Amaterasu or face persecution. This wasn’t a hypothetical threat; over 60,000 Christians were arrested during this time of intense persecution. Yet Chinsoo’s conviction was unshakable. Even as he faced arrest, imprisonment, and ultimately death, his focus wasn’t on whether he would live or die, but on remaining true to God. Before he parted from his spiritual father, Stanley, he left a message of reassurance: “You will never feel ashamed of your son. Whatever comes, I am looking to the Lord for His enabling power.” This simple but powerful statement shows us that Chinsoo wasn’t relying on his own strength, but on God’s. And that’s the key for us today—when we face life’s temptations and trials, we don’t stand alone. Our strength comes from the Lord.

What is especially moving about Chinsoo’s story is the way Stanley carried his death with him for the rest of his life, much like he carried the death of Christ in his heart. It speaks to the bond we share as Christians, united not just in life but in suffering and death. In moments of temptation or trial, we can draw inspiration from those who have gone before us, people like Chinsoo who stood firm in their faith, even unto death. And just as Jesus conquered death, so too do we have the promise of life everlasting. Chinsoo’s physical death wasn’t the end—it was a victory, a testimony of a life well lived in service to Christ. We may not all face the same level of persecution, but every day we face small decisions to stand for Christ, and these decisions matter.

As we go about our day, let’s carry this meditation in our hearts. When temptations or challenges arise, let us remember the examples of Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Chinsoo Kim, and ultimately Jesus Himself. They remind us that the cost of faithfulness is never too high when it’s for God’s glory. Ask yourself: Am I willing to stand firm, even when it’s hard? Where are the places in my life where I’m tempted to compromise? In those moments, I pray that we will have the courage to say “no” to sin and “yes” to God, trusting that He will provide the strength we need, just as He did for them.

Remember, God never leaves us alone in our struggles. Whether through His Word, His Spirit, or the example of others, He gives us everything we need to stand strong in the face of temptation. Let today’s reflection inspire you to live boldly for Christ, knowing that your faithfulness has eternal significance. No matter what you face, trust that God’s power is at work in you, and He will see you through.
