Life’s Unpredictability

A Call to Humility and Self-Examination

You know, life can really throw us some curveballs. One moment, everything seems to be going smoothly, and the next, things get flipped upside down. Jesus’ words often remind me that this unpredictability isn’t just a random occurrence; it’s a chance for us to pause, reflect, and examine our hearts. In Luke 12:35-40, Jesus teaches about being watchful, saying, “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet.” This imagery of readiness isn’t just about expecting the unexpected but about living in a constant state of humility and awareness.

Life’s twists and turns are opportunities to practice this posture of humility, to look inward and see where our hearts truly lie.

Think about it. When life is unpredictable, it strips away the illusion of control. We like to think we’ve got everything planned out, don’t we? But then, something unexpected happens—a job loss, a health scare, a broken relationship—and we’re left feeling vulnerable. It’s in these moments that Jesus calls us to self-examination. What am I relying on? What is my source of hope and strength? When things don’t go according to my plan, do I turn to God in humility, or do I stubbornly try to force my own way? Jesus’ words remind us that unpredictability can be a mirror reflecting the state of our hearts. As Charles Spurgeon once put it, “Trials teach us what we are; they dig up the soil and let us see what we are made of.” That’s the essence of self-examination.

But let’s be honest, self-examination isn’t always comfortable. It requires humility to admit that we’re not in control, to confess our shortcomings and the places where we’ve been holding on too tightly to our own plans. Jesus’ words encourage us to let go, to embrace a posture of dependence on God. In James 4:14, we’re reminded, “You do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” That’s not meant to be a gloomy statement; it’s a reality check. When we grasp that life is fleeting and unpredictable, we’re led into humility and the realization that we need God’s grace every single day.

Humility isn’t about belittling ourselves; it’s about seeing ourselves rightly in relation to God. It’s acknowledging that we don’t have all the answers and that it’s okay to lean into God’s wisdom. When we embrace humility, we open the door to growth and transformation. Jesus’ words aren’t meant to scare us but to invite us into a deeper, more authentic walk with Him. Life’s unpredictability becomes a teacher, shaping our character and deepening our faith. So, how do we respond to life’s unexpected turns? Are we willing to pause and let these moments guide us into self-examination, to bring our fears, hopes, and struggles before God?

The beauty of humility is that it’s always met with grace. When we come to God in our uncertainty, confessing our need for Him, He doesn’t turn us away. Instead, He draws us closer, refining us through the very unpredictability that unsettles us. Psalm 139:23-24 says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.” This is a prayer of humility and self-examination. It’s inviting God into the messiness of our lives, asking Him to reveal what needs changing and to lead us on His path.

So, let’s take life’s unpredictability as an invitation rather than a disruption. It’s a call to get honest with ourselves and with God. Where have we become too comfortable? Where are we relying on our own strength instead of God’s? And in what ways is God using these moments to mold us into His likeness? This self-examination isn’t a one-time deal; it’s a daily practice, a way of living that keeps us aligned with God’s purposes.

Reflection

Today, I encourage you to think about an area in your life that feels uncertain or out of control. Instead of resisting that feeling, take a moment to examine it in light of Jesus’ words. What might God be teaching you through this unpredictability? Is there an area of pride, fear, or self-reliance that He’s inviting you to surrender? Remember, life’s unpredictability isn’t meant to break you; it’s meant to shape you. Let it guide you into deeper humility and trust in God’s sovereign care.

Afternoon Encouragement

As you go through your afternoon, carry this truth with you: Life may be unpredictable, but God is unchanging. Allow that reality to bring you peace. Let today’s uncertainties drive you closer to the One who holds your tomorrow. Embrace humility, knowing that in your weakness, He is strong. Take comfort in the fact that you don’t have to have all the answers because you serve a God who does.
