When we think about armor, we might imagine knights in shining gear or soldiers in combat attire, all ready to protect themselves in the heat of battle. In Ephesians 6:15, the apostle Paul describes one part of our spiritual armor as having our feet fitted with the “readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” It’s a powerful image—shoes designed not just for standing, but for walking into life’s conflicts with a calm and steady heart. As I pondered this piece of armor, I realized that peace is like those shoes: they not only protect us as we move through life’s rocky terrain but also prepare us to serve our King by transforming discord into unity.
We all know how hard it can be to stay calm when life gets chaotic. From unexpected troubles at work to conflicts in our relationships, peace often feels like a fleeting dream. But Paul’s imagery reminds us that peace isn’t about avoiding conflict; it’s about being ready to face it in the right spirit. Think about shoes for a moment—they don’t remove the obstacles on the path, but they protect our feet so we can keep walking. In the same way, being “fitted with peace” means that we have a readiness to step into situations, however messy they may be, with a heart grounded in Christ’s peace. This isn’t a peace that ignores problems or shoves them under the rug. It’s a peace that comes from knowing who we are in Christ and allows us to engage with life’s difficulties without losing our sense of stability.
Take Luke 16:25-26, where we see the rich man in torment and Lazarus comforted in Abraham’s embrace. The rich man finds himself in anguish, likely because he lived a life of self-centeredness, lacking the kind of peace that reconciles us to God and others. The rich man pursued comfort at the expense of peace with God, whereas Lazarus, despite his earthly sufferings, found comfort in the next life. How many times have we seen this play out in our own lives? When we chase after comfort or success without prioritizing peace with God and others, we often end up like the rich man—troubled and restless. Peace, as part of our armor, keeps us from falling into that trap. It guards our hearts from being consumed by worry, bitterness, or a sense of lacking control.
But here’s the part I love about this metaphorical armor: it doesn’t just protect us; it also prepares us for action. When we walk through life grounded in peace, we become agents of reconciliation. Have you ever been in a room filled with tension and noticed how one calm, peaceful person can change the entire atmosphere? That’s what the readiness of peace allows us to do. When our hearts are rooted in God’s peace, we carry that peace with us wherever we go. We’re able to step into conflicts with a spirit of forgiveness and understanding, helping others find unity rather than adding to the chaos.
Think of those times when you’ve had the chance to mediate between two friends who were at odds or had to calm a tense situation in your family. It’s not always easy, is it? But when you approach these situations from a place of peace—being “ready” because you’re grounded in Christ’s love—you become a peacemaker. And Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9). When we walk into life’s storms equipped with the readiness of peace, we’re not only protecting ourselves from anxiety and fear; we’re also carrying out our mission as followers of Christ to bring peace into a broken world.
So how do we put on this piece of armor? It starts with daily communion with God—sitting at His feet, soaking in His presence, and letting His peace fill our hearts. From there, we practice readiness by choosing to react to life’s stresses with calm and patience. It doesn’t mean we never feel fear or frustration; it means we choose not to be ruled by them. Peace is not a feeling that comes and goes; it’s a strength we cultivate through our relationship with Jesus, who said, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you” (John 14:27). That peace becomes our footwear, helping us to walk through life’s rough patches without stumbling.
Encouragement for Today: Are you prepared to bring peace into your daily challenges? Let’s lace up our shoes of peace, grounded in the readiness that comes from knowing our God walks with us every step of the way.
