From Tragedy to Triumph

Hannah Luce’s Unbreakable Faith

Hannah Luce’s story is nothing short of extraordinary. On May 11, 2012, she and four of her friends boarded a plane bound for a youth rally in Iowa. Shortly into the flight, the plane crashed in a field in rural Kansas, killing everyone except Hannah. The crash left her with severe burns, yet miraculously, she survived. Guided by her friend Austin Anderson, a Marine who also survived the crash but later died from his injuries, Hannah managed to find help, eventually receiving life-saving medical care.

Her story, recounted in her book Fields of Grace, is one of unimaginable pain, both physical and emotional. She had to come to terms not only with the loss of her close friends but also with the trauma of her own survival. For months, she battled the excruciating pain of her burns and the psychological toll of the crash. She described the experience as a time when her faith was truly put to the test, forcing her to grapple with questions about God’s presence in the midst of such tragedy. Her father, Ron Luce, was by her side throughout the ordeal, helping her navigate the recovery process.

What is so inspiring about Hannah’s journey is her resilience and how she found purpose in her pain. She didn’t just survive; she came out of the experience with a renewed sense of faith and a mission to help others. Through her organization, Mirror Tree, she is now working to provide medical care and support for refugees who have experienced the horrors of war. She believes that her survival was not just for her own sake but to bring hope to others.

The challenges Hannah faced were monumental. Surviving such a catastrophic event left her physically scarred and emotionally drained. In the weeks and months following the crash, she couldn’t walk, couldn’t think clearly, and at times, she questioned whether she had the strength to go on. Yet, through the prayers and support of her family and community, she slowly began to rebuild her life. She credits much of her recovery to the “unseen hands of God,” as she calls them, which helped her through each painful step. It wasn’t just the doctors or even her own determination—it was the faith that God was still working, even in the darkest moments.

The turning point in Hannah’s journey came when she realized that her life wasn’t just about survival—it was about purpose. She recalls a moment in the hospital when she felt an overwhelming sense of God’s presence, reminding her that her pain was not in vain. It was during this time that she decided to start Mirror Tree, a foundation aimed at helping refugees, particularly women who have been victims of war and violence. She knew that she had to use her second chance at life to make a difference. Her determination to live with purpose, even after such immense suffering, is a powerful testament to the enduring strength of faith.

Hannah’s faith-driven actions have had long-term effects not only in her own life but in the lives of countless others. Her work with Mirror Tree is providing tangible help to people who are often forgotten or overlooked. She has taken her own suffering and turned it into a source of healing for others. Her story serves as a reminder that even in the midst of our greatest pain, God can work in ways we cannot yet see. Her belief that God will “make a way” when none seems possible echoes the sentiment of the famous worship song written by Don Moen, a song born out of similar tragedy but filled with hope.

Reflecting on Hannah’s story, I am reminded of 2 Samuel 22:26: “To the faithful you show yourself faithful.” Even in moments of deep despair, God’s faithfulness never wavers. Hannah’s journey illustrates this perfectly. When we hold on to faith, even when it feels impossible, God has a way of using our pain for a greater purpose. Her story encourages us to trust that our struggles are not meaningless but can be transformed into something beautiful.

For those of us navigating our own challenges, Hannah’s story is a powerful reminder that faith is not about escaping pain but finding purpose in it. Where in your life is God calling you to trust Him more deeply, to believe that He can make a way even when the path seems blocked?
