Luke 20:17-19
“Jesus looked directly at them and asked, ‘Then what is the meaning of that which is written: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone”? Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.’ The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.”
Evening Meditation
As we reflect on this passage from Luke, it’s clear that Jesus is giving a powerful, timeless message. When He speaks of the “stone the builders rejected,” He’s pointing to Himself—the cornerstone that many refused to accept, yet who would become the foundation of all that God was building. In a world that often places value on power, prestige, and self-made success, Jesus stands as a profound reminder that God’s ways defy human expectations. Jesus, the One who was overlooked, despised, and ultimately rejected, became the foundation for the Kingdom of God. His message is clear: the strength of our lives, the stability of our faith, rests on Him alone. When we choose to build on anything other than Christ, we build on unstable ground, risking the collapse of all that we hold dear. But when we place our trust in Him, we find a foundation that will never fail.
This passage also speaks to the consequences of rejecting Christ as the cornerstone. Jesus warns that “everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.” These words are weighty and sobering, calling us to consider the gravity of our relationship with Him. This evening, as we contemplate this passage, let’s ask ourselves what we are building our lives upon. Are we relying on our own wisdom and strength, or are we anchored firmly in Christ? To accept Jesus as our cornerstone is not merely a religious statement; it’s a commitment to place our lives in His hands, trusting that He alone provides the security we seek. Let this be a moment of surrender, as we lay down any self-reliance and embrace the stability that only Christ can provide. As we prepare for rest, may the thought of Jesus as our cornerstone fill our hearts with peace, knowing that we are held secure by a foundation that will never be shaken.
Evening Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You tonight, grateful for Your love that sent Jesus to be the cornerstone of my life. In Your wisdom, You chose the One who was rejected to be the foundation upon which everything in Your Kingdom rests. I thank You, Father, that You see beyond appearances, beyond human status, and choose what the world overlooks. As I reflect on this truth, I realize how often I have sought security in things that are fleeting—my own abilities, the approval of others, or the comforts of this world. But these things are shifting sands compared to the solid ground of Your love and grace. Father, forgive me for the times I have ignored the cornerstone You have provided in Christ. Tonight, I lay down my worries and fears at Your feet, trusting that in You, I am secure. Help me to build my life on the sure foundation of Your Son, confident that nothing in this world can shake me when I am anchored in Him.
Lord Jesus, my cornerstone, I am humbled by the way You took the place of rejection to become the very foundation of my life. You bore the weight of my sins, the shame of my failures, and the pain of being cast aside, yet You rose victorious. Because of You, I have a firm foundation, an eternal hope that cannot be shaken. I confess that there are moments when I look to other things for stability, thinking they will fill the void that only You can. But tonight, I recommit my heart to You, acknowledging that You alone are my security. Teach me to rely fully on You, to trust in Your strength rather than my own. As I close my eyes to sleep, I rest in the knowledge that You are the cornerstone, unmovable and unchangeable. May my life be a reflection of Your love and grace, built firmly upon Your teachings and Your sacrifice.
Holy Spirit, my guide and comforter, I invite You to shape my heart, to deepen my understanding of what it means to make Christ the cornerstone of my life. You know the areas where I struggle to surrender, where I cling to control, and where I hold onto fear. Tonight, I ask You to soften my heart, helping me to release these things and trust fully in Jesus. Reveal to me the beauty and strength of a life built on Christ alone. As I sleep, let my heart dwell on the security and peace that come from resting in His presence. Holy Spirit, be my constant reminder of the unshakable foundation I have in Christ. Empower me to live boldly, unafraid of what tomorrow may bring, knowing that I am anchored in the One who is eternal. Thank You for Your guidance and comfort, which lead me deeper into the love of my Savior.
Thought for the Night
In the stillness of the night, remember that Jesus is the cornerstone upon which all true security rests. When our lives are built on Him, we have a foundation that cannot be shaken. Sleep in peace, knowing that your hope is anchored in Christ.
