As the Day Begins

Matthew 26:6-13
“While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came to Him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on His head as He was reclining at the table. When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. ‘Why this waste?’ they asked. ‘This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.’ Aware of this, Jesus said to them, ‘Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to Me. The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have Me. When she poured this perfume on My body, she did it to prepare Me for burial. Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.’”

Meditation

In this passage, we witness a moment of both tenderness and controversy. The woman’s act of anointing Jesus with costly perfume was an expression of her deep love and reverence for Him. It was a gift without reservation, freely given, embodying sacrificial devotion. Her act not only honored Jesus as her Savior but also anticipated His impending death, a detail Jesus Himself highlights when He says she prepared Him for burial. The disciples’ indignation at what they perceived as waste reveals how easily we can miss the eternal value of worship when preoccupied with practical concerns. Jesus’ response, however, places her act in the realm of the eternal, ensuring her story would echo throughout history.

For us, this scene invites a personal reflection on how we approach our devotion to Christ. Do we, like the woman, offer our best in worship, or are we more inclined to measure our service through worldly lenses? The alabaster jar reminds us of the beauty of extravagant love poured out in gratitude. It challenges us to consider whether we withhold any part of ourselves—our time, resources, or affection—from the One who gave everything for us.

Prayer

To the Father:
Heavenly Father, I come before You in awe of the love and devotion displayed by the woman in this story. Her willingness to pour out her most precious possession as an act of worship reminds me of the value of selfless surrender. Teach me, Lord, to offer You my best without hesitation, holding nothing back. Forgive me for the times I have clung too tightly to the things of this world and failed to recognize the eternal importance of worshiping You with all that I am. Help me see beyond the temporal and embrace a heart that treasures You above all.

To the Son:
Lord Jesus, I thank You for honoring the woman’s act of devotion and for teaching us the eternal significance of loving You wholeheartedly. I see in her the courage to defy criticism and the wisdom to prioritize You above all. May her example inspire me to pour out my love for You extravagantly, without fear of judgment or concern for earthly measures. You alone are worthy of such worship, for You gave Your life to redeem mine. Teach me to honor You daily with my words, actions, and sacrifices, always aware of Your presence in my life.

To the Holy Spirit:
Holy Spirit, fill my heart with the same passion and devotion that moved the woman to anoint Jesus. Stir within me a love that overflows in worship and service. Guide me in recognizing opportunities to glorify God with my actions, whether great or small. Help me to discern what is truly valuable in this life and to let go of anything that hinders my wholehearted devotion to Christ. Empower me to live in a way that reflects the beauty of sacrificial love, trusting that my offerings, no matter how small, can glorify God when surrendered to Him.
