As the Day Begins

I will recount the steadfast love of the LORD, the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD has granted us, and the great goodness to the house of Israel that He has granted them according to His compassion, according to the abundance of His steadfast love. For He said, “Surely they are My people, children who will not deal falsely.” And He became their Savior. In all their affliction He was afflicted, and the Angel of His Presence saved them; in His love and in His pity He redeemed them; He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. (Isaiah 63:7‒9)

A Meditation

The words of Isaiah in this passage call us to remember and proclaim the steadfast love of the LORD, a love that has carried His people through every season of their journey. By recounting the mercies of God, Isaiah invites us into a sacred practice of gratitude. The term chesed, often translated as “steadfast love,” conveys a covenantal love that does not waver despite the failures of humanity. God’s love is not merely an emotional response but a purposeful and enduring commitment to His people, even when they falter. This is a powerful reminder that His love defines our relationship with Him, not our shortcomings.

The imagery in verse 9 is deeply personal and emotional: “In all their affliction He was afflicted.” This statement reveals the heart of God, who not only observes the suffering of His people but shares in it. The Angel of His Presence, a reference to God’s intimate nearness, actively intervenes to save, redeem, and sustain. The idea of God being “afflicted” in our struggles shows the depth of His empathy. This foreshadows the ultimate expression of His shared suffering through Jesus Christ, who bore our sins and griefs on the cross (Isaiah 53:4–5). His compassion is not passive; it lifts and carries us when we cannot stand on our own.

As we meditate on God’s actions in the history of Israel, we are reminded of His faithful character in our own lives. He redeems, He lifts, and He carries. When we face moments of despair, the same God who saved Israel walks with us. The text urges us to embrace the unchanging truth of His love and to rest in the knowledge that He is actively present, even in our darkest moments. His covenant love is a firm foundation, and recounting it strengthens our faith for the days ahead.

A Prayer

Heavenly Father, I lift my heart to You in awe of Your steadfast love. Your faithfulness spans generations, and Your covenantal kindness endures forever. Thank You for being a God who does not grow weary of Your people but continues to love and sustain us despite our failures. You have demonstrated through history that Your promises are unshakable, and Your compassion is unmatched. In my moments of doubt, remind me to recount all that You have done, for Your mercies are new every morning.

Lord Jesus, Savior and Redeemer, You have borne my afflictions and carried my sorrows. In Your great love, You entered into my suffering, not as an observer but as One who shares in my pain. I thank You for the sacrifice that brought me redemption and for the assurance that You are near in every trial. Help me to see Your presence in the small moments of my day, to feel Your comfort when I am weary, and to trust in Your power to lift me when I cannot walk on my own.

Holy Spirit, You are the Angel of His Presence who walks with me. Fill my heart with gratitude and awe as I reflect on the steadfast love of the LORD. Guide my thoughts, words, and actions so they may glorify the One who has redeemed me. Empower me to extend that same love and compassion to others, being a reflection of Your character. May I never forget the One who lifts and carries me, and may I walk boldly in the truth of Your unending faithfulness.
