When the Word is Rejected
Jeremiah 36:23-26 (ESV)
“As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the brazier, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier. Yet neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, nor did they tear their garments. Even when Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son and Seraiah the son of Azriel and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord hid them.”
Meditation: The Indestructible Word of God
There is something unsettling about this passage. King Jehoiakim, the ruler of Judah, is handed the words of the LORD through the prophet Jeremiah, a divine message meant to warn and lead the people toward repentance. But instead of trembling before GOD’S warnings or considering the consequences of his actions, Jehoiakim defiantly burns the scroll, page by page, as if the flames could erase the truth. He does not weep, nor does he repent. He refuses to acknowledge the weight of GOD’S word.
As I reflect on this passage tonight, I realize that rejection of GOD’S word is nothing new. Though the methods may differ, the spirit of defiance remains the same. Some dismiss Scripture as irrelevant. Others twist it to fit personal agendas. Some simply ignore it altogether, choosing their own way over GOD’S truth. But as Jehoiakim learned, rejecting GOD’S word does not make it void. The scroll was burned, but the message endured. GOD commanded Jeremiah to rewrite the very same words, ensuring that HIS truth would not be silenced (Jeremiah 36:27-28).
This passage invites me to ask myself: How do I respond to GOD’S word? Do I treat it as optional? Do I selectively listen, keeping only what comforts me while discarding what convicts me? Or do I stand in awe of HIS voice, allowing it to shape my heart and actions? Jehoiakim’s arrogance led to his downfall, but GOD’S word remained steadfast. No matter how the world tries to suppress it, GOD’S truth stands eternal. Tonight, as I prepare for rest, I surrender to the authority of HIS word, trusting that HIS promises and warnings are as unshakable as HE is.
Prayer: A Heart Yielded to God’s Word
HEAVENLY FATHER, YOUR word is everlasting. Nations rise and fall, rulers come and go, but YOUR truth remains unchanged. As I settle into the quiet of this evening, I reflect on how easily the human heart resists YOUR voice. I see in Jehoiakim a picture of pride and defiance, and I wonder, LORD, how often have I done the same? Have I ignored YOUR correction, dismissing it as inconvenient? Have I chosen comfort over conviction, turning away from the harder truths YOU speak? Forgive me, FATHER, for the times I have hardened my heart. Let me not be like Jehoiakim, who thought he could silence YOU with fire, but instead like David, who cried, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). Teach me to cherish YOUR word, even when it challenges me, even when it calls me to change.
LORD JESUS, YOU are the living WORD, the fulfillment of all that was spoken through the prophets. The world rejected YOU just as Jehoiakim rejected Jeremiah’s scroll, yet nothing could stop YOUR mission. The cross could not silence YOU, the tomb could not hold YOU, and history cannot erase YOU. I take refuge in that truth tonight. When the world mocks and dismisses YOUR name, remind me that YOUR kingdom is not shaken by human rejection. Fill me with boldness to stand firm in YOUR word, to speak it in love, and to live it out with unwavering faith. And when doubt creeps in—when I am tempted to question whether YOUR truth is still powerful in a world that resists it—remind me that YOUR word will never return void (Isaiah 55:11). Let me rest in that assurance tonight.
HOLY SPIRIT, open my ears to hear and my heart to obey. Let YOUR voice be louder than the distractions of the world. Where there is hesitation, give me resolve. Where there is fear, give me courage. And where there is pride, humble me. Let YOUR truth be engraved upon my heart, so deeply that no force on earth could erase it. May I live not by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of GOD (Matthew 4:4). As I lay down to sleep, let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in YOUR sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer (Psalm 19:14). Amen.
Thought for the Night
No fire, no rejection, no rebellion can erase GOD’S word. HIS truth endures forever, and those who embrace it will stand secure. Sleep in peace, knowing that HIS promises are unshakable.
