As the Day Begins

A Prayer for Grace and Blessing

Scripture: Psalm 67:1
“May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us.”

Meditation:

As dawn breaks and we move from the quiet hush of night into the stirrings of a new day, the psalmist’s prayer in Psalm 67:1 becomes a fitting benediction and invocation. “May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us.” These words are not just poetic—they are deeply relational. They are the cry of a heart longing for the presence of a loving God who is near, attentive, and generous.

This verse echoes the Aaronic blessing found in Numbers 6:24–26, reminding us that our desire for God’s grace, blessing, and radiant favor is not a selfish plea but a biblical one. The idea of God’s face “shining” upon us suggests warmth, approval, and intimacy. In Hebrew culture, a shining face conveyed delight and favor, like the glowing face of a father toward his beloved child. We often walk through our days wondering if we are seen, known, or cherished. But this verse reminds us that in God, we are seen with favor. His countenance upon us is not one of indifference but of intentional love.

What’s most insightful about Psalm 67:1 is that the blessing it requests is not meant to stop with us. The psalm continues (in verses 2–3) to show that God’s blessings are meant to lead to proclamation: “so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.” In other words, we are blessed to be a blessing. This morning, as you sit with this verse, consider not only what it means to receive God’s grace and favor but also how you might radiate that same favor toward others today. Your smile, your kindness, your patience—these can be reflections of the Father’s shining face.

Whether you are heading to work, caring for a loved one, preparing a sermon, or simply sipping your morning coffee—pause to ask that God’s gracious presence be known in every interaction you have today. Let His face shine through yours, and may your life be a vessel through which His blessing flows to others.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
As this day begins, I humbly ask for Your grace. I do not presume to earn Your favor, but I seek it because You are merciful and kind. Be gracious to me in my weaknesses, my failings, and my forgetfulness. As the sun rises and casts light across the earth, let Your face shine upon my heart and mind. Let me feel the warmth of Your approval, not because I am perfect, but because I am Yours. Fill my life with the awareness of Your nearness, and may I be attentive to Your blessings, both seen and unseen.

Lord Jesus, Son of the Living God,
You are the image of the invisible God, the radiance of His glory. When I think of God’s face shining upon me, I see You. Your compassion, Your truth, Your sacrifice—all reveal the loving favor of God toward me. Help me today to walk in the blessing You have secured by Your cross. May I not hoard that blessing, but share it freely—with words of encouragement, acts of mercy, and the joyful sharing of the Gospel. Let others see in me the grace that flows from You.

Holy Spirit,
You are the breath of the morning, the quiet voice that stirs my soul awake. As I go through this day, guide my steps and sensitize my heart. Help me notice the people You place in my path. Make me a conduit of divine blessing, someone whose life reflects the shining face of the God I serve. When discouragement tries to creep in, whisper reminders of God’s favor. When I’m tempted to judge, convict me to bless instead. Fill me with a contagious peace and joyful hope that can only come from You.

Thought for the Day:

Let God’s face shine upon you today—not just to comfort you, but to commission you. You are blessed so that others might come to know the God who blesses.
