As the Day Ends

The Power That Divides and Delivers

1 Corinthians 1:18–19
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.’”

The closing of a day invites reflection, not only on what has happened, but on what truly matters. As we meditate on Paul’s words to the Corinthians, we find ourselves faced with a message that is both timeless and divisive—the message of the cross. To some, it is absurd, irrelevant, even offensive. To others, it is the wellspring of salvation, the source of hope, and the display of divine power. This paradox captures the very heart of the gospel: what the world sees as weak and foolish is, in truth, the greatest expression of wisdom and strength.

Paul draws a stark line between two groups: those who are perishing and those who are being saved. The cross, far from being a neutral symbol, demands a response. To the natural mind—proud in intellect and achievement—the idea that salvation comes through the suffering and death of a crucified man is laughable. But for those whose eyes have been opened by faith, the cross is not folly—it is everything. It is where God’s justice and mercy kiss, where sin is defeated, and where love is most clearly seen.

The quotation from Isaiah reminds us that God has always been in the business of overturning human expectations. He delights in dismantling worldly wisdom to reveal His greater plan. This should humble us. Our cleverness, education, or insight cannot substitute for revelation. Only by the Spirit can we see the cross for what it truly is. As this day comes to a close, let us remember that the message of the cross is not just a doctrine to believe—it is a lifestyle to embrace. It shapes how we love, forgive, endure, and hope.

An Evening Prayer

To the Heavenly Father:
Father God, as the quiet of evening settles over my life, I pause to reflect on the message of the cross. I thank You for making a way where there was none—for choosing to save through what the world sees as weakness. I confess that I often seek answers in my own strength and wisdom, and I forget that Your power is made perfect in surrender. Remind me tonight that Your ways are higher than mine. Let me rest in the knowledge that You are not impressed by the world’s applause, but by hearts humbled before You. Teach me, even in my weariness, to trust the wisdom that flows from Calvary.

To the Son, Jesus Christ:
Lord Jesus, thank You for enduring the cross, despising its shame, and offering Yourself so that I might be saved. Tonight, I think of the countless moments I’ve taken Your sacrifice for granted. You turned what the world considered defeat into eternal victory. When I am tempted to lean on my own intellect or to demand signs and logic, gently bring me back to the foot of the cross. Let my soul never tire of its message. May I carry Your cross daily—not only in belief but in how I serve, suffer, and love others. Shape my heart to reflect Yours, even when it means being misunderstood by the world.

To the Holy Spirit:
Holy Spirit, enlighten the eyes of my heart as I lie down to rest. Help me discern truth from falsehood, eternal value from temporary allure. Quiet the noise of worldly reasoning and help me listen for Your still, small voice. You are the One who reveals the power of the cross to my spirit, who convicts me when I stray, and comforts me when I fail. Breathe peace over my mind and renew my soul with the truth that I am being saved, shaped, and sanctified day by day. Let tomorrow be lived in the light of Calvary, with every decision anchored in the wisdom that comes from above.

Thought for the Day:
The cross is not only the place where Jesus died—it is the place where our wisdom ends and God’s power begins. Walk today in the power of a Savior who turned the world’s foolishness into everlasting triumph.

Blessing:
May the Lord bless your faithful service on this day, whether seen or unseen, whether celebrated or forgotten by others. Your labor in the Lord is never in vain. Rest now in His grace and rise tomorrow in His strength, for He who began a good work in you will carry it to completion.
