As the Day Begins

Listening Beyond the Noise

Scripture Reference: Psalm 85:8 – “I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants—but let them not turn to folly.”

Devotional Meditation:

In the quiet moments before the day begins, Psalm 85:8 invites us into an intentional posture of listening: “I will listen to what God the Lord says.” In a world filled with ceaseless noise—from the ping of notifications to the rush of responsibilities—listening to the Lord requires more than silence; it requires surrender. This verse is not merely a call to hear, but a call to heed—to lean in with expectancy, trusting that the One who speaks also gives peace.

The Psalmist reminds us that the Lord promises peace to His people. This is not a fragile or circumstantial peace, but shalom—a deep, holistic well-being rooted in God’s covenantal faithfulness. The peace of God doesn’t deny the chaos around us; it anchors us in the middle of it. But the verse adds a warning: “Let them not turn to folly.” The Hebrew word for folly (kesil) points not just to foolishness but to moral stubbornness—a turning away from God’s ways. The message is clear: peace is promised, but it is often forfeited by our own choices.

Years ago, I found myself overwhelmed by the pressures of ministry and family. I was doing all the right things but had ceased to truly listen. My soul had become a noisy room. One morning, exhausted, I finally sat in silence with this very Psalm. I didn’t hear an audible voice, but I sensed God reminding me: “You are working too hard to hear Me.” That moment of stillness redirected my day—and my life. His peace followed not because my circumstances changed, but because my posture did.

As you begin today, make space not just to read Scripture, but to wait before the Lord. What if the peace you seek is already promised—and only waiting to be heard?

Triune Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
I come before You this morning with a heart longing for stillness. In the whirlwind of obligations and distractions, teach me to tune my ears to Your voice. You are faithful in all Your promises, and I trust that Your word today is peace. Help me to lay down my assumptions, my anxieties, and my self-reliance so I can hear You clearly. Guide me in Your wisdom and steer my steps away from folly. Father, thank You for being patient with me even when I am slow to listen.

Lord Jesus, Son of God,
You walked this noisy world with divine clarity, never distracted from the Father’s voice. Thank You for modeling a life of prayerful attentiveness. You are the Word made flesh, the Peace-giver, the Shepherd who calls His sheep by name. Help me to follow Your voice today and not the competing calls of culture or fear. Let me walk in Your rhythm of grace, and may Your peace guard my heart and mind. Remind me that You intercede for me, even when I don’t know what to pray.

Holy Spirit,
You are the whisper within and the fire that leads. Come, Spirit of truth, and illuminate the Word I have read this morning. Let it take root and bear fruit in my thoughts, my words, and my actions. Quieten the noise within me so that Your voice rings clear. Convict me when I veer toward folly and stir within me a hunger for righteousness. May Your presence accompany me throughout the day, aligning my spirit with the will of the Father and the mission of the Son.

Thought for the Day:
The peace of God is not hidden; it is heard by those who choose to listen.

Blessing:
Thank you for beginning your day in the presence of God. May your heart remain tuned to His voice, your spirit anchored in His peace, and your steps aligned with His wisdom.
