Only God is Truly Good
Scripture Reference: Mark 10:18 – “Why do you call Me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.”
Devotional Meditation
In this brief but weighty verse, Jesus responds to a well-intentioned man who addresses Him as “Good Teacher.” His reply startles us at first—doesn’t Jesus qualify as good? Isn’t He the embodiment of righteousness? But in His answer, Jesus is not denying His own divinity; rather, He is prompting the man (and us) to examine what “goodness” really means and who ultimately defines it. This moment reminds us that true goodness is not a human trait achieved by comparison or moral effort but a divine attribute rooted solely in the nature of God.
Jesus challenges the man—and us—to lift our gaze from human benchmarks and to recognize that the ultimate standard of goodness is the Father Himself. In a world filled with relative morality, shifting ethics, and shallow praise, this verse reorients our hearts to the holiness of God. When Jesus says, “No one is good—except God alone,” He’s pointing us to the core of the Gospel: we need salvation not because we’re bad compared to others, but because even our best falls short of God’s perfect goodness.
Years ago, I sat with a man who had given generously to his church, served in the community, and raised a fine family. Yet in the quiet of a hospital room, he asked me, “Have I been good enough for heaven?” I remembered this verse. I gently said, “None of us are—but thank God, Jesus is.” That conversation ended not in fear, but in peace. The man came to rest not on his moral resume but in Christ’s righteousness. Let Mark 10:18 draw you to the same place today—off of your self-evaluation and onto God’s unwavering mercy.
Triune Prayer
To the Heavenly Father:
Father, I come before You in awe of Your goodness. In a world that confuses success with virtue, You are the eternal and unchanging measure of what is right and holy. Thank You for revealing Your character through Scripture and through the life of Jesus. I acknowledge that apart from You, my understanding of goodness is limited and flawed. Help me today to see You more clearly, to rest in Your justice, and to reflect Your love in my interactions with others.
To the Son:
Jesus, thank You for the way You gently correct and lovingly lead. Your words in Mark 10:18 stir my heart to look beyond human affirmation and fix my eyes on divine truth. Though You are indeed good, You humbled Yourself to teach us reverence for the Father. You laid aside glory to bring us grace. Thank You for living the life I could not live and offering the righteousness I could never earn. May my soul rest in Your finished work and my life echo Your example.
To the Holy Spirit:
Holy Spirit, awaken in me a hunger for true goodness—not the kind that earns applause, but the kind that reflects the heart of God. Convict me when I settle for appearances and draw me deeper into sincerity and holiness. Fill me today with the fruit of goodness that overflows in word and deed. Keep me tender to Your promptings, rooted in Scripture, and responsive to Your guidance. You are the Counselor I depend on, the breath that animates my faith.
Thought for the Day: True goodness begins when I stop comparing myself to others and start drawing near to God.
Blessing:
Thank you for beginning your day in God’s presence. May the goodness of the Father, the grace of the Son, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit shape every moment of your walk today.
