Loving God with All We Are

As the Day Begins

Devotional Meditation

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.” (Deuteronomy 6:4–6, ESV)

These verses, often called the Shema, are among the most treasured in Scripture. They remind us that our faith is not simply about following commands, but about entering into a relationship of love with the living God. Before we ever talk about obedience, discipline, or religious practice, the Lord calls us first to love Him—fully, deeply, and wholly. Love is not an accessory to faith; it is the very heart of it.

When Moses spoke these words to Israel, the people were preparing to live out their covenant with God in a land filled with distractions and false gods. To remain faithful, they needed more than rituals—they needed hearts that burned with love for the One who rescued them. The same is true for us today. We live in a culture brimming with competing loyalties. Our faith will not survive on rule-keeping alone; it must be sustained by a living love for God that engages our heart, soul, and strength.

I remember a season in my own life when my faith felt more like a checklist than a relationship. I was doing all the right things—reading Scripture, attending church, serving in ministry—but my heart was weary and distant. It was not until I returned to the simple command of loving God, sitting quietly before Him in prayer, and remembering His love for me in Christ that my devotion came alive again. Love is the flame that fuels obedience; without it, the spiritual life becomes cold duty. With it, every act of service becomes a joy-filled offering.

This passage calls us to begin our day not with a sense of burden but with a renewed heart of love. As you step into today’s responsibilities, remember that the Lord asks not first for your performance, but for your love. And when love is at the center, obedience naturally follows.

Triune Prayer

To the Heavenly Father:
Father, I come before You this morning with gratitude that You are the One true God, eternal and unchanging. Thank You for revealing Yourself so clearly in Your Word and for inviting me to love You with all that I am. Too often I let distractions pull my heart in different directions. Forgive me when I allow lesser loves to compete with You. Today, I ask for a heart that delights in You above all things. Let my love for You not be shallow or half-hearted, but full and sincere, springing from the knowledge of Your great love for me.

To the Son:
Lord Jesus, You embodied this love perfectly when You laid down Your life for us. You showed us what it means to love the Father with heart, soul, and strength, even to the point of the cross. I praise You for giving me not only an example but also the grace and power to follow You. Teach me to love the Father as You did—with obedience, trust, and joy. Help me to carry Your love into every part of my life today: into my conversations, my work, and my quiet moments. May others see Your love through me and be drawn closer to You.

To the Holy Spirit:
Holy Spirit, breathe fresh love into my soul today. Stir within me the affection and devotion that sometimes grows weak under the weight of life’s demands. Remind me of the Father’s promises and the Son’s sacrifice so that my love for God deepens with each passing moment. Guide me into truth, empower my obedience, and guard my heart against idolatry. I yield to Your presence and ask that You fill me with joy, peace, and strength as I live out this calling to love the Lord my God with all that I am.

Thought for the Day

Love is the foundation of obedience. Begin today not by striving to perform for God, but by loving Him deeply—and let everything else flow from that love.

Thank you for beginning your day in God’s presence. May His love dwell richly in your heart, and may your walk today be marked by joy, peace, and devotion.
