Scripture Reading: Daniel 5–6

The Fall of Babylon

Daniel 5 brings us to one of the most dramatic nights in Scripture—the night Babylon fell. King Belshazzar was hosting a feast that turned into reckless carousing. In an act of arrogance and disrespect, he ordered that the sacred vessels from the Jerusalem temple be brought out for drinking. Those holy vessels, once consecrated to God’s glory, were now filled with wine as the king and his guests toasted false gods of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. What began as carousing soon turned into profaning the sacred.

Then it happened—the moment that has lived in history as “the handwriting on the wall.” A mysterious hand appeared and began to write on the plaster of the palace wall. The sight was terrifying. Belshazzar’s face went pale, his strength left him, and his knees knocked together. In desperation, he summoned the wise men of Babylon to interpret the writing, but none could explain it. The silence of the wise men left the king more shaken.

At that point, the queen reminded Belshazzar of Daniel, a man in whom the Spirit of God dwelt. Daniel was called, and though the king promised him lavish rewards for interpreting the writing, Daniel refused. He would not be bought. Instead, he rebuked the king for his arrogance, reminding him of how God had humbled his predecessor Nebuchadnezzar. Then Daniel delivered the meaning of the mysterious words:

MENE – God has numbered your kingdom and brought it to an end.

TEKEL – You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.

PERES – Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

That very night, Belshazzar was slain, and Darius the Mede received the kingdom. The doom of Babylon was sealed, and the judgment of God fell swiftly.

This sobering account reminds us that nations and leaders are not beyond God’s reach. The mightiest kingdom can fall in a single night when pride and rebellion fill its cup. What God writes, no one can erase. As Isaiah 40:17 says, “All the nations are as nothing before Him; they are accounted by Him as less than nothing and emptiness.”

Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Daniel 6, in contrast, is a story not of judgment but of deliverance. Under King Darius, Daniel was promoted to a position of great authority. His character and integrity were so evident that he quickly rose above the other officials. But jealousy set in. Those around him sought to bring him down, yet they could find no fault in his conduct—except in matters of his devotion to God.

So they devised a plot. They convinced Darius to issue a decree that no one could pray to any god or man except the king for thirty days. Anyone who disobeyed would be thrown into the den of lions. The law of the Medes and Persians could not be revoked. Their plan was clear: trap Daniel through his faith.

But Daniel did not hesitate. Knowing the decree had been signed, he went to his upper room, opened his windows toward Jerusalem, and prayed three times a day, just as he had always done. His enemies caught him in the act and reported him. Bound by his own law, the king reluctantly had Daniel cast into the lions’ den. Yet even as he gave the order, Darius expressed a flicker of hope: “May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!”

That night, the king could not sleep. At dawn, he rushed to the den and called out, “O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?” To his amazement, Daniel answered back: God had sent His angel to shut the lions’ mouths, and Daniel was untouched. Overjoyed, Darius ordered Daniel lifted out, and then he condemned his accusers to the fate they had planned for Daniel. The lions devoured them instantly.

The chapter closes with the king issuing a decree that all in his realm must tremble and fear before the God of Daniel, for He is the living God who endures forever.

Lessons for Us

Both chapters together give us a powerful contrast. Daniel 5 shows us the collapse of arrogance; Daniel 6 shows us the triumph of faith. One king mocked God and fell in a single night. Another king witnessed God’s power to save and proclaimed His greatness throughout the empire.

What can we take from this? First, God humbles the proud and lifts up the faithful. Belshazzar exalted himself and lost everything. Daniel humbled himself before God and was preserved. James 4:6 echoes this truth: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Second, Daniel’s consistency in prayer is a model for us. He did not pray more in crisis nor less when under threat; he prayed as he always had. His habits of devotion were not shaken by fear. That steady faith is what carried him through the lions’ den.

Third, God’s sovereignty is the thread running through both stories. He brings down nations and delivers individuals. His justice and mercy flow through history with equal certainty. Nations may rise and fall, but His kingdom endures forever.

Encouragement for the Journey

As we continue through the Bible this year, Daniel’s example encourages us not to waver. The handwriting on the wall is a reminder that God sees all and holds history in His hands. The lions’ den is a reminder that God is able to deliver His people from the fiercest trials. Both chapters point us to the same conclusion: our God reigns.

So let us remain faithful in prayer, steadfast in devotion, and humble in spirit. The God who shut the mouths of lions is the same God who hears your prayers today. The God who weighed kingdoms on His scales is the same God who will establish His eternal kingdom in Christ Jesus.

Thank you for committing to this journey through God’s Word. As you study Daniel’s courage and Babylon’s fall, may you be reminded that the Word of God never returns void. May your faith be strengthened, your hope renewed, and your prayers filled with confidence in the God who rules over all.
