Called to Follow in His Steps
As the Day Begins
Devotional Meditation
1 Peter 2:20–21 reminds us: “But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps.”
Suffering is not a word we welcome at dawn, but it is a reality in the Christian journey. Peter tells us plainly that suffering is not always punishment nor evidence of failure. Sometimes, it is the very pathway through which God shapes our faith and strengthens our witness. The world applauds those who strike back when wronged, but Scripture commends the one who endures hardship with patience, knowing the Father sees, understands, and remembers. Such endurance is not passive weakness; it is an active choice to trust in God’s justice while refusing to let bitterness corrode the soul.
The example set before us is none other than Christ Himself. Jesus, who could have called down legions of angels, chose instead to bear injustice silently, entrusting Himself to the Father’s will. His suffering was not meaningless; it purchased our redemption. In the same way, our trials—when endured in faith—are never wasted. They become testimonies that light the way for others. The steps of Jesus are narrow and costly, but they are the only steps that lead to life. To follow Him is to lay aside vengeance and pride, learning instead the deeper strength of mercy and endurance.
As this day unfolds, we must ask: how will I respond when confronted with unfairness, insult, or hardship? The temptation will be to complain, retaliate, or despair. But Peter calls us to something higher: to see even our trials as opportunities to reflect the patience of Christ. When we endure for His sake, we participate in His story and display the reality of His presence. What a gift that our sufferings can be transformed into a quiet testimony of faith, hope, and love that honors the Lord.
Triune Prayer
Father, I come to You at the beginning of this day with a heart that longs for strength. Too often I resent suffering, seeing it as a burden instead of a calling. But Your Word tells me that endurance is precious in Your sight. Father, give me eyes to see the hidden value of trials and the courage to bear them without complaint. Guard me from resentment and remind me that You are the Judge who sees and knows all things. Let my heart rest in Your goodness, trusting that You use even pain to shape me into Your likeness.
Son, I thank You for walking before me in the path of suffering. You endured mockery, betrayal, and the cross itself, yet never turned aside from the Father’s will. Teach me to walk in Your steps today. Help me remember that to follow You is not only to share in Your blessings but also in Your sufferings. When I feel weary or unjustly treated, let me remember the cross where You bore it all for me. May Your love steady me, and may Your example inspire me to endure with patience, that others might see You living in me.
Holy Spirit, fill me with the power to endure what I cannot in my own strength. Quiet my spirit when anger rises. Whisper peace when fear presses in. Stir in me a gentleness that does not come from myself but from Your abiding presence. Lead me moment by moment, that even in the face of hardship I may reflect Christ. Holy Spirit, let today’s trials become today’s testimony. Strengthen my resolve, soften my heart, and guide my words, that all I do might point back to the love of the Father and the sacrifice of the Son.
Thought for the Day
Endurance in suffering is not wasted—it is the way we walk in the steps of Christ and shine His presence into the world.
Thank you for beginning your day in God’s presence. May the Father strengthen you, the Son guide you, and the Holy Spirit sustain you in every step you take today.
