When John the Baptist sent word from prison asking Jesus, “Are You the One who was to come?” he was a man in pain and uncertainty. The reply Jesus sent was not what John expected—it wasn’t a rescue, a promise of freedom, or even an explanation. Instead, Jesus told John’s disciples, “Go back and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the deaf hear, the dead are raised.” In that moment, John’s expectations collided with divine purpose. Jesus wasn’t ignoring him; He was reminding John that God’s answers often transcend our circumstances. We want immediate relief, but God answers with eternal perspective. His silence isn’t absence—it’s sometimes His way of redirecting our gaze from earthly troubles to heavenly truths.
There’s something quietly reassuring about realizing that God’s plans are larger than our pain. John wanted deliverance from a dungeon, but Jesus was unveiling deliverance for all humanity. To ask is to recognize our need; to seek is to actively align our will with His; to knock is to persist even when we can’t see what’s happening behind the door.
This process transforms us from passive wishers into active participants in God’s unfolding plan. We discover that prayer is less about persuading God and more about being shaped by Him. The deeper we go, the more our desires begin to mirror His. Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that “without faith, it is impossible to please God.” Faith keeps us asking when logic says stop, seeking when results seem distant, and knocking when doors remain closed.

When we pray, faith turns our words from wishes into worship. It doesn’t demand explanations; it rests in assurance. Faith doesn’t erase struggle—it steadies us in it. John’s faith wavered in the dungeon, but it was still faith that prompted his question. God welcomes honest faith—the kind that asks, “Where are You?” while still believing He’s near.

1 John 5:14–15 assures us that “if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” That phrase—according to His will—is both comforting and challenging. It reminds us that prayer is not a way to bend heaven to our desires, but a way to align earth with heaven’s design. God always answers, but sometimes His answer is “yes,” sometimes “not yet,” and sometimes “I have something better.” Our role is not to dictate outcomes but to trust the character of the One who listens.
Consider the moments when God’s “no” protected you from something lesser, or His delay developed something deeper within you. Every unanswered prayer is an invitation to deeper surrender. As Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, “Not My will, but Yours be done.” That prayer remains the ultimate model for ours. Submission to God’s will doesn’t weaken faith; it strengthens it by anchoring it in divine wisdom rather than human desire.
