Putting God First

As the Day Begins

Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

As the Day Begins

Each new morning brings choices—some small and practical, others weighty and eternal. At the center of all these decisions lies one foundational question: Who or what will come first today? Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:33 invite us to reorder the chaos of our priorities by aligning them with the heart of God. “Seek first the kingdom of God,” He said, not because God is needy, but because our souls are. The invitation is less about demanding loyalty and more about restoring harmony—putting God first so that everything else finds its rightful place.

When we put God first, we aren’t adding Him to a crowded schedule or squeezing Him into a few quiet minutes before the day takes over. We are, instead, acknowledging that every moment belongs to Him. To seek His kingdom first means to live with open hands—trusting that the God who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows will also care for us. Our faith journey becomes less about managing anxiety and more about living within divine order. As we begin this day, Jesus reminds us that our hearts are healthiest when our loves are rightly arranged.

Yet this principle runs against much of what our culture prizes. We are told to “put ourselves first,” to pursue happiness as though it were a possession. But Jesus reverses that logic. He teaches that the path to fullness runs through surrender. When God becomes our first pursuit, we discover that He was our deepest desire all along. The worries that once ruled us begin to lose their grip because our focus shifts from what we lack to Who we follow. Our spiritual disciplines—prayer, Scripture reflection, and daily devotion—become the means by which we practice this reordering of love.

This morning, take time to breathe and ask, “What am I seeking first?” If your answer feels cluttered by lesser things, you are not alone. Every disciple wrestles with misplaced priorities. But God’s mercy meets us in that struggle. As we seek His kingdom first, His righteousness begins shaping our responses, our relationships, and even our responsibilities. The promise of Matthew 6:33 is not that life will become easy but that life will become whole—because when God is first, everything else falls into place.

Triune Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for this new day and for the gracious reminder that You are the source of all life and the center of all order. I confess how often I try to manage the day in my own strength, trusting schedules instead of Your sovereignty. Today I choose to put You first—to seek Your will before my own and Your glory before my comfort. Father, teach me to rest in Your provision and to trust that You will supply everything I truly need. Let my heart be content in the sufficiency of Your grace.

Lord Jesus, Son of God, You showed us what it means to live with the Father at the center. You rose early to pray, You obeyed even unto the cross, and You trusted the Father’s plan when everything else seemed lost. Shape my priorities to mirror Yours. Guard me from the noise that drowns out Your voice. When fear or ambition competes for first place in my heart, remind me of the cross—where love won and where all lesser loves bow down. Help me to walk today as Your disciple, seeking Your kingdom in every conversation and decision.

Holy Spirit, I welcome Your presence into this moment and this day. Order my inner world so that my outer world reflects Your peace. When I feel scattered, gather me back to the center—Christ in me, the hope of glory. Give me discernment to see what truly matters and courage to let go of what does not. Fill me with Your wisdom so that every word I speak carries grace. Guide my steps into divine appointments, and let my life bear witness that seeking God first is not a burden but a blessing.

Thought for the Day

When we put God first, everything else finds its place. Begin today with a heart that seeks His kingdom before anything else—and you’ll find His fingerprints in everything you do.

Thank you for beginning your day in God’s presence. May His peace lead you through every challenge and His joy accompany you in every task.
