As the Day Ends
And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
Luke 12:19
Jesus’ parable of the rich fool is not a warning against having possessions, but against living as though possessions have replaced God. The man spoke to his own soul as if barns could secure eternity. He had goods, plans, comfort, and confidence, but he had ruled God out of the conversation. His tragedy was not that he planned for tomorrow, but that he planned without reverence for the One who held tomorrow.
As the day ends, this passage asks me to examine what I have trusted today. Did I measure life by productivity, comfort, money, reputation, or control? The secular heart does not always deny God loudly; sometimes it simply ignores Him quietly. Jesus calls me back from self-sufficiency to dependence, from material confidence to spiritual sobriety, and from empty ease to eternal wisdom.
Heavenly Father, I come before You tonight grateful that my life is not sustained by what I own, earn, store, or control. Forgive me for the moments when I acted as though my security rested in visible things rather than in Your faithful hand. Teach me to receive daily provision with humility, to plan with reverence, and to remember that every breath is a gift from You.
Jesus the Son, I thank You for speaking truthfully about the danger of a self-sufficient soul. You did not come to rob me of joy, but to rescue me from false treasure. Help me hear Your voice above the noise of comfort and ambition. Draw my heart away from empty confidence and toward the riches of grace, mercy, obedience, and eternal life in You.
Holy Spirit, search me gently as I rest tonight. Reveal where I have ignored God in my decisions, my home, my work, or my private thoughts. Give me an insightful awareness of anything that has become too important in my heart. Quiet my anxieties, reorder my desires, and help me wake tomorrow ready to live before God with gratitude, wisdom, and surrender.
