As the Day Ends
“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
Galatians 5:24
As this day ends, Galatians 5:24 invites us to examine more than our outward behavior. Paul speaks of those who “belong to Christ Jesus” as people who have crucified the flesh. The Greek word sarx, translated “flesh,” refers here to the fallen impulses that resist God’s rule. These desires are not defeated merely by stronger emotion, longer prayers, or greater religious effort. They are brought beneath the authority of the cross.
A. W. Tozer compared this surrender to crossing into the Promised Land. Many believers stand near the river, looking toward a fuller life with God, yet hesitate to leave behind the familiar patterns of self-rule. The wilderness may be barren, but it feels predictable. Surrender feels risky because it requires us to release the ambitions, resentments, appetites, and private loyalties that have helped us feel secure.
The Christian life is not earned through spiritual intensity. Every blessing flows from God’s grace. Yet grace does not leave us unchanged. The same grace that forgives also teaches us to deny ungodliness. Tonight, the question is not whether I have prayed long enough to deserve God’s favor. The question is whether I am willing to let Christ put to death what keeps me from walking freely with Him.
Heavenly Father, I thank You that every good gift in my life flows from Your mercy rather than my merit. I confess that I often cling to familiar desires even when they keep me spiritually restless. Show me where self-love, pride, fear, or ambition still governs my decisions. Give me grace to release what cannot enter the life of obedience You have prepared for me.
Jesus the Son, You did not merely call me to admire the cross; You called me to follow You through it. Thank You for dying to free me from sin’s guilt and power. Teach me to reckon the old life as crucified with You. When surrender feels costly, remind me that nothing I lay down for Your sake can compare with the life I receive in You.
Holy Spirit, search me as I rest tonight. Expose desires I have excused and habits I have protected. Do not allow me to settle for standing near the border of obedience. Fill the places I surrender with Your presence, and produce in me love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Before sleeping, name one desire, habit, or ambition that has resisted Christ’s authority, and deliberately entrust it to Him in prayer.
Galatians 5:24 teaches that belonging to Christ involves a decisive break with the ruling power of sinful desires. This crucifixion of the flesh is not self-earned salvation but the continuing work of grace in believers who surrender themselves to Christ.
