As the Day Ends
“Not of works, lest any man should boast.” —Ephesians 2:9
Evening Meditation
As this day closes, it is worth asking who received the attention in the stories we told about ourselves. Boasting can sound openly proud, but it can also wear religious clothing: “I only mention this for God’s glory.” The Greek word behind “boast,” kauchaomai, describes taking pride or placing confidence in something. Ephesians 2:8–9 removes every reason for spiritual self-congratulation. We are saved by grace through faith—not by our performance, sacrifice, service, knowledge, or reputation.
Self-belittling may appear to be the opposite of pride, yet it can keep the ego equally central. Boasting says, “Notice how impressive I am.” False humility says, “Notice how unworthy I am.” Both continue looking in the mirror. True humility is not thinking endlessly about how great or terrible we are; it is becoming so occupied with Christ that we no longer need to manage everyone’s opinion of us.
God is more concerned with forming our souls than advertising our service. He may lovingly expose pride, interrupt our plans, or withhold recognition so that our identity rests in grace. Tonight, we can release both our accomplishments and failures. The good we did was enabled by God; the wrong we did can be confessed and forgiven. We do not need to swagger before Him or grovel at His feet. We may simply rest as children saved by grace.
Triune Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that my relationship with You does not depend upon my ability to impress You. Forgive me for the pride I displayed today, whether it appeared as boasting, defensiveness, comparison, or exaggerated self-criticism. Teach me to receive every ability and opportunity as a gift. Help me rest tonight without rehearsing either my achievements or my inadequacies. Let Your grace quiet my need to be noticed.
Jesus the Son, You possessed all glory yet humbled Yourself and became obedient to the cross. Thank You for accomplishing the salvation I could never earn. When I am tempted to make ministry, sacrifice, or goodness into evidence of my importance, turn my attention back to You. Free me from both self-promotion and false humility. May my life point quietly and honestly toward Your goodness rather than my image.
Holy Spirit, search the hidden motives beneath my words and actions. Show me where ego has learned to sound spiritual. Purify my service so that I can obey without needing applause and receive correction without collapsing into self-condemnation. Form within me the humility that is truthful, peaceful, and secure in Christ. As I sleep, continue Your gracious work within me and prepare me to serve tomorrow with a freer heart.
Thought for the Evening
Before sleep, name one good thing from today and thank God for enabling it. Then confess one failure without excusing or exaggerating it. Give both to grace, and rest without either boasting or belittling yourself.
