Faithful Support, Gracious Endurance, and the Father Who Never Forgets
Heaven’s rewards are not limited to the people whose names appear on church signs, missionary newsletters, or ministry websites. Jesus teaches that God sees the quiet believer standing behind the visible servant. Some preach the sermon, while others provide the place where it can be preached. Some travel to distant mission fields, while others pray, give, encourage, and make the journey possible. The ministries may differ, but every faithful act becomes part of the same kingdom work.
Jesus said, “He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward” (Matthew 10:41, KJV). He continued, “Whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple…shall in no wise lose his reward” (Matthew 10:42, KJV). The Greek word for reward, misthos, refers to a recompense or recognition given for faithful service. Jesus is assuring us that no contribution to His work is invisible to the Father.
This does not mean we purchase heavenly treasure or earn our salvation. Salvation remains God’s gift of grace through Christ. Even our ability to serve is supplied by Him. A Ligonier Ministries study explains that God rewards His people for works that would never have been possible without His grace. Heavenly reward is grace recognizing what grace itself produced.
Our participation in another person’s ministry may involve money, but it also includes hospitality, prayer, encouragement, transportation, teaching children, preparing meals, maintaining a building, or simply offering that “cup of cold water.” The person holding the rope is joined to the work of the person descending into the well. Therefore, we should thoughtfully support churches, pastors, missionaries, and ministries that faithfully proclaim Christ and bear spiritual fruit. We are not merely making donations; we are entering into their labor.
Jesus also connects heavenly reward with the way we respond when faithfulness becomes costly. “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you…for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven” (Matthew 5:11–12, KJV). This promise does not apply to suffering caused by our own harshness or foolishness. It belongs to those who are mistreated because they remain loyal to Christ while answering hostility with love, prayer, and goodness.
John Piper writes that “the reward of heaven will more than compensate for any suffering” endured in Christ’s service. He reminds us that heavenly hope enables believers to experience joy without denying their pain (Desiring God). Betsy Childs Howard adds, “Our problem is not that we seek reward, but that we expect it to come from the wrong people” (The Gospel Coalition). Human appreciation is uncertain; God’s recognition is not.
James 1:12 and Revelation 2:10 gather suffering, perseverance, and reward into one promise: those who remain faithful will receive the crown of life. These passages do not portray God as a reluctant accountant but as a loving Father who delights to honor His children. Every faithful gift, gracious response, unseen sacrifice, and persevering step is remembered in heaven.
May the Lord help you invest wisely, love generously, endure faithfully, and serve joyfully—knowing that nothing offered to Christ is ever wasted.
