Don’t Stop Halfway Up the Mountain

As the Day Begins

“If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.” —John 12:26

The word “mediocre” comes through Latin roots suggesting something situated halfway up a mountain. It is a fitting picture of a Christian who began climbing with enthusiasm but eventually became comfortable somewhere between the valley and the summit. Such a believer may have abandoned obvious sins and adopted respectable habits, yet stopped pursuing the fuller life of fellowship, obedience, and service that Christ offers.

Jesus does not call us merely to admire Him from a comfortable distance. He says, “Let him follow Me.” The Greek verb akoloutheō means to accompany someone, join them on the road, and follow as a disciple. Following Jesus is continuing movement, not a single decision preserved as a memory. Grace meets us in the valley, but it never encourages us to build a permanent home halfway up the mountain.

The Father’s promised honor is not payment for earning salvation. Salvation remains the gift of divine grace. This honor is the Father’s loving recognition of a servant who keeps walking behind His Son. We may grow weary, pause to regain our strength, or stumble on the climb. Christ does not condemn the exhausted traveler. He calls us to rise, take His hand, and begin moving again.

Triune Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess that I have sometimes become satisfied with spiritual mediocrity. I have remembered earlier commitments without continuing to act upon them. Thank You for not abandoning me halfway up the mountain. Awaken within me a renewed hunger for Your presence. Search my heart, expose the comfortable places where I have stopped growing, and give me courage to take the next faithful step. May the honor I seek come from You rather than from the approval of others.

Jesus the Son, You have not merely called me toward a destination; You have invited me to follow You personally. Forgive me when I have wanted Your blessings without accepting the demands of discipleship. Lead me out of spiritual complacency and teach me to walk closely behind You. When the path becomes steep, remind me that You have already traveled the road of obedience before me. Let my service today reveal that I truly belong to You.

Holy Spirit, breathe fresh strength into the places where my devotion has grown tired. Restore the disciplines I have neglected, renew the love that has cooled, and make me attentive to Your guidance. Show me one act of obedience I can complete today. Guard me from comparing my progress with someone else’s journey. Keep my eyes fixed upon Christ, and patiently transform me until my thoughts, desires, words, and actions increasingly reflect His life.

Thought for the Day

I will identify one area in which I have settled for “halfway”—prayer, Scripture, forgiveness, service, generosity, or obedience—and take one definite step forward. God is not asking me to reach the summit before breakfast; He is asking me not to make peace with standing still.
