Resting in the God Who Delights in His Children

As the Day Ends

“Truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” —1 John 1:3

Evening Meditation

The way we understand God shapes the way we live before Him. If we imagine God as irritable, impossible to satisfy, and watching for an opportunity to condemn us, our Christian walk will become anxious and joyless. We may continue praying, serving, and worshiping, but we will do so like frightened employees rather than beloved children. A. W. Tozer wisely observed, “Our notion of God must always determine the quality of our religion.” A distorted view of God eventually produces a distorted spiritual life.

John presents something entirely different. He speaks of “fellowship” with the Father and the Son. The Greek word koinōnia describes sharing, participation, communion, and close relationship. Through Christ, we are not merely tolerated in God’s presence; we are welcomed into fellowship with Him. Jesus said, “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father” (John 14:9). When we watch Jesus receive children, touch lepers, restore failures, weep with mourners, and forgive sinners, we are seeing the heart of God revealed.

This does not mean God overlooks sin or abandons holiness. The cross demonstrates both His justice and His mercy. Christ bore the judgment our sin deserved so that God could remain righteous while receiving repentant sinners. Psalm 103:8 declares, “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.” As this day closes, we can rest in the assurance that God’s holiness does not make Him reluctant to love us; His holy love is what makes His mercy trustworthy.

Triune Prayer

Heavenly Father, as this day ends, I come to You with gratitude that You are not the harsh and temperamental God my fears sometimes imagine. You are righteous, compassionate, patient, and faithful. Thank You for knowing my weaknesses without despising me and for correcting me without casting me away. Forgive the ways I have misrepresented Your character through anxiety, suspicion, or loveless religion. Quiet my heart tonight and help me rest as Your child. Where I failed today, lead me into honest confession. Where I obeyed, keep me humble. Where I remain burdened, remind me that Your hands are strong enough to hold what I cannot resolve before morning.

Jesus the Son, thank You for showing me what the Father is like. In Your compassion I see His tenderness; in Your truth I see His holiness; in Your sacrifice I see the immeasurable reach of divine love. Thank You for opening the way into fellowship with God through Your blood. I bring You every wound, regret, disappointment, and unfinished concern from this day. Teach me to lay them down rather than carry them into the night. Guard me from believing that I must earn the love You have already demonstrated at Calvary. Let the assurance of Your intercession bring peace to my conscience and rest to my body.

Holy Spirit, correct every unworthy conception of God within me. Replace fearful assumptions with the truth of Scripture and form in me the character of Christ. Where my heart has become severe, make me gracious. Where religion has become duty without delight, renew the joy of communion with God. Search the hidden places within me and reveal anything that needs confession, healing, or surrender. As I sleep, remain the comforting presence of God within me. Prepare my heart to awaken with renewed confidence that I am loved, guided, and never abandoned.

Thought for the Evening

Before you sleep, name one troubling thought about God and compare it with the character of Jesus. Let Christ’s life and cross—not fear—tell you who the Father is.
