As the Day Ends
“That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” — 1 Corinthians 2:5
As this day ends, I am reminded that knowing about God is not necessarily the same as knowing God. Theology gives us words for understanding His character, works, and purposes, but information alone cannot produce spiritual life. Paul told the Corinthians that his preaching did not rest upon human eloquence or intellectual display. He wanted their faith—pistis in Greek—to rest in the dynamis Theou, the power of God. Christian faith is not irrational, but neither is it the product of human reasoning alone. The Holy Spirit takes the truth revealed in Scripture and opens our understanding so that we receive it, trust it, and live beneath its authority.
Divine illumination does not add new truth to the Bible or excuse us from careful study. It enables us to recognize and embrace the truth God has already revealed. Paul explained that the “natural man,” the psychikos anthrōpos, does not welcome the things of the Spirit because they are spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14). Without the Spirit’s work, we may analyze a passage accurately while resisting its claim upon us. Peter could confess that Jesus was “the Christ, the Son of the living God” because the Father had revealed that truth to him (Matthew 16:16–17). Tonight, I do not merely ask whether I have read Scripture. I ask whether I have allowed Scripture, through the Spirit, to read me.
Triune Prayer
Father, thank You for revealing Yourself rather than leaving me to construct an image of You from my imagination. You have spoken through the prophets and apostles, and supremely through Your Son. Forgive me for the times I have approached Your Word merely to collect information, confirm my opinions, or impress others. Give me a humble and teachable heart. As I rest tonight, remove the pride that keeps me from hearing correction, and prepare me to receive Your truth with reverence, gratitude, and obedience.
Lord Jesus, You are not merely the subject of Christian teaching; You are the living Word who brings me into fellowship with God. Thank You for giving Yourself on the cross and rising again so that my faith rests upon God’s saving power. Guard me from substituting religious vocabulary for genuine discipleship. Let every truth I learn draw me closer to You, shape my character, and deepen my love for others. May what I believe about You become visible in the way I speak, forgive, serve, and trust.
Holy Spirit, illuminate the Scriptures and open my heart to their meaning. Protect me from confusing personal preference with Your guidance or emotional excitement with spiritual truth. Lead me into truth that is consistent with the Word You inspired. Bring neglected commands to my remembrance, strengthen me to obey what I already understand, and transform knowledge into worship. Quiet my mind tonight, examine the motives beneath my thoughts, and let the truth of Christ settle deeply within me as I sleep.
Thought for the Evening
Before closing my Bible tonight, I will pause over one verse and pray, “Holy Spirit, show me what this reveals about God, what it exposes within me, and what obedience it requires.” Theology becomes spiritually alive when revealed truth is received with faith and practiced through God’s power.
