As the Day Ends
“Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” — John 4:14
Jesus spoke these words to a woman who had come to Jacob’s well carrying more than an empty water jar. She also carried disappointment, broken relationships, and a thirst no earthly source had satisfied. Jesus offered her hydōr zōn—“living water.” This was not merely temporary relief but divine life placed within her, continually springing toward eternity. Christ does not simply help us endure our thirst; He becomes the unfailing source of life within us.
As this day ends, we may recognize that many things we pursued did not satisfy us. We completed tasks, solved problems, enjoyed comforts, or received recognition, yet something within us still longs for God. Tozer called this “a jubilant pining and longing for God”—a spiritual homesickness that keeps us seeking Christ even while we rest in Him. Healthy longing is not evidence that Christ has failed us. It is evidence that His life within us is drawing us toward greater communion with Him. We have tasted the living water, and now the shallow wells of this world cannot satisfy us as they once did.
Father, I come to You at the close of this day grateful that You have not left me to satisfy my soul with temporary things. Forgive me for the moments when I sought comfort more eagerly than holiness or valued Your gifts more than Your presence. Awaken within me a sincere longing to know You, love You, and walk more closely with You. Where sin has dulled my desire, cleanse me. Where weariness has weakened my attention, restore me. Let my heart become homesick for Your presence, and teach me to rest tonight beneath Your faithful care.
Jesus, You are the giver of living water and the Savior who knows every hidden thirst within me. Thank You for meeting me without contempt and speaking truth without withdrawing Your love. I bring You the disappointments, temptations, and unfinished concerns of this day. Become more precious to me than the temporary satisfactions I have chased. Draw me nearer to Your heart, deepen my compassion for people who are still searching, and make Your life within me a spring of hope. As I sleep, keep my soul secure in the grace You purchased for me.
Holy Spirit, flow through the dry and neglected places of my inner life. Create within me a holy desire that is joyful, steady, and centered upon God. Reveal anything that obstructs my fellowship with You, and give me courage to surrender it. Replace spiritual indifference with attentiveness, selfish comfort with compassion, and restless striving with trusting communion. Let the living water of Christ refresh my thoughts and renew my strength. Prepare me to awaken with a deeper desire for Scripture, prayer, obedience, and service, carrying the presence of God into tomorrow.
Thought for the Evening
Before you sleep, sit quietly for a few moments and tell God where your soul feels thirsty. Do not hurry to fill the silence. Receive Christ’s promise again: the life He gives is not a cup that runs empty but a spring that continues flowing into eternity.
