As the Day Begins
“[Give] thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” — Ephesians 5:20–21, ESV
An orchestra becomes beautiful when musicians listen as carefully as they play. Each brings something valuable, but each also makes room for others. Paul invites us into that kind of shared life. In Ephesians 5, gratitude and mutual submission belong to his description of a community filled with the Spirit. Our thankfulness to God should shape how we treat the people beside us. Having received mercy we could never earn, we have little reason to insist that our preferences always take first place.
Submission can begin with something ordinary: hearing someone out, accepting correction, sharing responsibility, or serving without needing recognition. Reverence for Christ gives these choices their purpose. We honor Him by taking seriously those He loves. This does not require us to surrender wise judgment or cooperate with wrongdoing. It calls us to release the pride that makes every conversation a contest. Humility makes room for another person without erasing the gifts God has given us. Before today becomes crowded with demands, ask whose voice you need to hear and whose burden you might help carry.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the life and strength that make this morning possible. Everything I bring into this day rests upon Your generosity. Forgive me when I receive Your gifts as though I created them myself. Help me recognize the worth of people whose abilities, experiences, and opinions differ from mine. Give me a grateful heart that welcomes opportunities to serve. When I feel overlooked, remind me that Your loving attention is enough to sustain me.
Jesus the Son, You welcomed the overlooked and washed Your disciples’ feet. I confess that I sometimes want the honor of following You while resisting the inconvenience of Your example. Teach me to listen without preparing my defense and to help without seeking applause. Let reverence for You govern my words when disagreement comes. Give me courage to speak truth gently and humility to receive it from someone else. May those who encounter me today experience something of Your patient care.
Holy Spirit, fill the places in me where pride keeps demanding control. Help me notice when I interrupt, dismiss, or quietly assume that my way is best. Bring Your wisdom into those moments before they become hurtful words. Guide me toward cooperation that strengthens my family and church. When service becomes tiring, renew my willingness to love. Shape my gratitude into generosity, and make my presence a source of encouragement to someone who needs it today.
Thought for the Day
Choose one conversation today in which you will listen fully before responding. Ask a sincere question, give the answer your attention, and consider what you can learn. Ephesians 5:20–21 connects gratitude toward God with mutual submission among believers: receiving His goodness prepares us to treat one another with humility and care.
