Another beautiful day in Jackson County. We knew after the long winter, the warm weather would be such a blessing. I hope you get a chance to get out and enjoy it. I write today from home due to a visit from the flu bug. Sometimes you just can’t win. Here’s a thought for today.
Paul lived in a secular world like we do. Thankfully, Brownstown is less so. The Roman government that was ruling over Paul’s world was cruel and corrupt. Apparently, the world hasn’t changed a lot. Yet Paul was led to write to the Roman Christians: "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established… Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted… Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience" (Romans. 13:1-2, 5).
Sometimes we think it would be easier if we didn’t have to obey them. But we have a relationship with them for a reason. We are citizens for more than our rights. We are here for God.
To the believers in Corinth, one of the most immoral, secular cities of the day, Paul wrote: "For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life" (2 Cor. 2:15-16).
Peter reminded the church, "Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us" (1 Pet. 2:12).
These passages should make us think about the many and varied ways we Christians in the United States have responded to the erosion of values in our nation. How should we respond to the disturbing changes in our society? What action should I take, if any, to influence the ungodliness around me?
What is the best way to effect change in a given situation?
- Is there more than one acceptable way?
- Is my response to these controversial issues pleasing to God?
- Are my actions and life drawing people to Christ or repelling them?
