Exodus 17:6

“I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.”

Anthony B. Robinson

I was talking with my friend, Bob, the other day about a gnarly church situation where I had both the opportunity and responsibility to offer leadership.

Bob listened to me ramble on about the situation for a while, and then said – quite directly – “You are being too cautious. You’re all in your head about this. Are you risking anything? What are you learning?”

Ouch. I just hate it when someone speaks truth to me. Truth hurts. And it helps.

Moses was out in the wilderness with a bunch of thirsty people. Whiners. He was tired of listening to their complaints and suggested they take their problems up with God.

God told Moses it was time to take a risk. It was time to risk something big for something good. “Strike the rock,” said God, “and water will come out of it, so that the people will drink.”

“Where’s your big heart?” Bob said to me. “You have to risk something.”

There are times to do something bold. Times to take a risk. Times to stop diddling around and strike the rock. Maybe that time has come for you?

Prayer

Lord, grant me the courage to risk something big for something good. Amen.
