Jesus is now about to perform the ultimate kind of miracle that will certify him as the Messiah and will be reported to John the Baptist (“the dead are raised,” v. 22). Luke also wants his readers to understand that while John the Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah, it is Jesus himself who is the great prophet of the end time. This miracle bears significant resemblance, as we shall note, to one performed by Elijah. Luke has already included a reference to the widow Elijah ministered to (4:25-26).
