Andrew Garfield to Star in Martin Scorsese-Directed Movie about Jesuit Missionaries

Hollywood filmmaking icon Martin Scorsese is directing a new historical movie starring Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson about 17th-century Jesuit missionaries. Based on a novel of the same name, Silence tells the story of a Jesuit priest (Father Rodrigues) who travels to Japan to find his missing mentor, who may have recanted his faith under duress. Scoresese told Variety that the story—which focuses heavily on religious persecution—deals with “the very essence” of Christianity and the message of Christ. “It’s a religious subject, but the mystery that I’m talking about, Rodrigues’ conflict with himself, and the essence of Christianity—which is something I believe in strongly — is timeless, and has to do with who we are as human beings” …
