Why Is the Discipline of Silence So Hard?

There are several reasons why humans may find it difficult to practice the spiritual discipline of silence:

  1. Busy lives: In today’s fast-paced world, we are often consumed with busyness and distractions. Many people find it difficult to slow down and intentionally set aside time for silence and stillness.
  2. Inner restlessness: Our minds are constantly active, with thoughts and emotions running through our heads. Sitting in silence can be challenging as it may bring up uncomfortable emotions or thoughts that we may not want to face.
  3. Fear of missing out: In our social media-driven culture, we are often connected and engaged with others through technology. The fear of missing out on something important can make it difficult to unplug and spend time in silence.
  4. Lack of familiarity: Silence may be a foreign concept to some people, especially those who are accustomed to constant noise and stimulation. It can take time to become comfortable with silence as a spiritual practice.
  5. Cultural conditioning: Our society tends to value productivity and activity, often leaving little room for rest and stillness. This conditioning can make it difficult for individuals to prioritize and value the spiritual discipline of silence.

It is important to recognize that developing the discipline of silence is a process that takes time and practice. By intentionally setting aside time for silence, we can learn to quiet our minds and become more attuned to the presence and voice of God.
