As the Day Begins…

Romans 9:1-5 (NIV) states:

“I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit— I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people, those of my own race, the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption to sonship; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.”

Here is a morning prayer derived from this text:

“Heavenly Father, I thank you for this new day, filled with your mercy and your love. As I rise this morning, I am reminded of the unceasing anguish that Apostle Paul carried in his heart for his people. I ask you, Lord, to burden my heart with the same love and concern for my family, friends, and the world around me.

Help me to remember the blessings of our spiritual heritage, the divine glory, the covenants, the law, the temple worship, and the promises that are ours in Christ. Inspire me to deeply appreciate these gifts, and to honor them as I walk through this day.

Just as the lineage of the Messiah was traced through the patriarchs of Israel, help me to see your hand at work in my life and in the lives of those around me. Make me ever mindful that you are God over all, worthy to be praised in every situation.

As the day unfolds, Lord, give me the courage and strength to share the good news of your Son, Jesus Christ, with those around me. May my life reflect your glory and your love to those who do not yet know you.

In the precious and powerful name of our Messiah, Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.”
