Matthew 6:16-18:
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Evening Meditation:
As the day draws to a close and the quiet of the evening settles in, let us reflect on the words of Jesus regarding fasting. In a world filled with distractions and demands, fasting can serve as a sacred discipline, a means of drawing closer to God and aligning our hearts with His will. Yet, as Jesus reminds us, fasting is not about outward appearances or seeking recognition from others. It is a deeply personal and intimate act of devotion, meant to be carried out in the secret place of our hearts, where only God sees and knows.
In the stillness of this evening, let us examine our motives and intentions in our spiritual practices, including fasting. Are we seeking to impress others with our piety, or are we genuinely hungering and thirsting for righteousness? Let us release any desire for validation or praise, instead surrendering ourselves fully to the loving gaze of our Heavenly Father. May our fasting be marked by humility, sincerity, and a longing to experience the presence and power of God in our lives. As we prepare to rest in His care tonight, may we find comfort and assurance in knowing that our Father sees and rewards the faithful obedience of His children, even in the secret places of our hearts.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, as I come before You in this evening hour, I humbly acknowledge Your sovereignty and grace. Thank You for the gift of another day and for the opportunity to seek Your presence through fasting and prayer. As I reflect on the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:16-18, I confess any pride or vanity that may have tainted my spiritual practices. Forgive me, Lord, for the times when I have sought recognition from others rather than seeking Your approval alone. Help me to cultivate a heart of humility and sincerity in all that I do, including my acts of devotion and worship.
Gracious God, as I prepare to rest in Your presence tonight, I ask for Your strength and guidance to walk in obedience and authenticity. May my fasting be a pleasing fragrance to You, a genuine expression of my love and devotion to You. Help me to fast not for my own gain or recognition but out of a desire to draw closer to You and to align my will with Yours. May Your Spirit empower me to live a life of integrity and authenticity, reflecting Your love and grace to those around me.
Lord, I entrust my evening into Your hands, knowing that You see and know all things, even the secret desires of my heart. As I lay down to sleep, may Your peace guard my heart and mind, and may Your presence surround me with comfort and assurance. Thank You for Your faithfulness and love that never fail. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Thought for the Night:
“In the stillness of the night, may our hearts be attuned to the whisper of God’s voice, guiding us in sincerity and humility.”
