As the Day Ends

“Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.’ But he said to him, ‘Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?’ And he said to them, ‘Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.’”
— Luke 12:13-15 (ESV)

As you prepare to close your eyes and rest tonight, consider the scene that unfolds in Luke 12:13-15. A man approaches Jesus, eager to resolve a dispute over inheritance. He’s caught up in a common struggle—the desire for material wealth and the belief that life’s worth can be measured by what we own. But Jesus, in His wisdom, sees beyond the immediate concern and addresses the deeper issue at hand.

He doesn’t just give legal advice; He offers a spiritual diagnosis:

“Be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Jesus shifts the focus from what we have to who we are and reminds us that our true value lies not in material wealth but in the richness of our relationship with God.

As you lie in bed tonight, take a moment to reflect on your own heart. Are there areas where the pursuit of possessions or status has taken priority over your relationship with God? It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day demands and forget what truly matters. Jesus’ words invite us to release the tight grip we often have on the things of this world and instead hold fast to the eternal treasures that cannot be taken away. As you contemplate this, allow the peace of knowing that your worth is found in Christ to wash over you. Let go of any anxieties about what you lack or what you desire and rest in the assurance that you are loved and valued beyond measure by your Heavenly Father.

Evening Prayer

Heavenly Father,
As the day draws to a close, I come before You, acknowledging the many ways I have been tempted to measure my worth by what I possess. It’s so easy to get caught up in the pursuit of more—more security, more comfort, more recognition. Yet, in Your Word, You remind me that life is about so much more than the accumulation of things. Father, I thank You for the gentle yet insightful reminder that my life’s true value is found not in what I own, but in who I am in You. As I prepare to rest, I ask that You would help me to release any attachments I have to the material things of this world. Replace any anxiety I carry with the peace that comes from knowing You are my provider and my source of true wealth. Help me to trust in Your goodness and to seek first Your kingdom in all that I do.

Lord Jesus,
You taught us that life does not consist in the abundance of our possessions, but in the richness of our relationship with You. As I reflect on Your words tonight, I am reminded of the many times I have placed my trust in things rather than in You. Forgive me for the times I have allowed the pursuit of material wealth to overshadow my relationship with You. I ask that You would draw me closer to Your heart, helping me to see the emptiness of worldly pursuits compared to the fullness of life that comes from walking with You. Teach me to be content with what I have and to find my joy and satisfaction in You alone. May my life be a reflection of Your love and grace, and may I live each day with an eternal perspective, seeking to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth.

Holy Spirit,
I invite You to work in my heart tonight as I rest. Search me and know me; reveal any areas where I have placed too much importance on material things. I ask for Your guidance in helping me to realign my priorities according to the values of the kingdom of God. Fill me with a spirit of contentment and gratitude and help me to see the blessings that surround me each day. As I sleep, I pray that You would renew my mind, shaping my thoughts to be more like Christ’s. Guard my heart against covetousness and greed and help me to walk in humility and generosity. Let the peace that comes from resting in Your presence fill me tonight, so that I may wake refreshed and ready to serve You with a heart that is fully devoted to Your will.

Thought for the Night

Tonight, rest in the truth that your life’s worth is not measured by what you own but by who you are in Christ. Let go of any worries about material things and find peace in the assurance that God is your provider and sustainer.
