Get Ready for God’s Big Reveal

What the Future Holds for Us

We all love a good celebration, don’t we? Birthdays, holidays, weddings, new babies—these are the moments that bring us together and give us joy. In the church, we’ve got our own big days to celebrate, like Easter and Christmas, where we look back on the incredible events of Jesus’ birth and resurrection. These moments are at the heart of our faith, reminding us of everything Jesus did for us. But here’s the thing: the story of Jesus doesn’t stop there. After Jesus rose from the dead and ascended to heaven, God’s plan wasn’t finished. He’s still at work, and there’s something even more amazing in store for us in the future.

You see, God isn’t just about the past or the present—He’s also all about the future. He’s in the business of restoration and renewal, and He’s promised to bring back the paradise we lost way back in the Garden of Eden. That’s right, the Bible tells us that there will be a new heaven and a new earth, a place where everything is perfect and we get to live forever with God. We’re talking about the ultimate “happily ever after.” The very last chapter of the Bible is all about this restoration. You might’ve heard someone say, “I don’t know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future.” Well, they’re partly right, but the truth is, we actually do know a bit about what’s coming. Back in AD 95, while on the island of Patmos, the risen Jesus gave the apostle John a sneak peek into the future—He showed him how God plans to restore everything to the way it was meant to be.

Living in God’s Perfect Place

When John says he saw a “new heaven and a new earth” in Revelation 21:1, he’s taking us full circle. The Bible begins with God creating the heavens and the earth in Genesis, and now we see it all being renewed and restored in Revelation. It’s not like God is just going to toss out the old world and start from scratch. No, He’s going to take this world, broken and polluted as it is, and make it new again—better than we could ever imagine. Eugene Peterson explains it beautifully when he says that the story of the Bible begins and ends with creation. The mess that sin made of the world in Genesis is going to be completely restored by the time we get to the end of Revelation.

Think about the world we live in now. It’s polluted, not just physically, but morally and spiritually. But God, who is perfect, wants us to live in a perfect world with Him, just like He intended from the beginning. Everything—our atmosphere, the planets, even our own resurrected bodies—is going to get an upgrade beyond anything we can comprehend. Then there’s that curious detail John adds: “And the sea was no more.” At first, that might sound like a bummer if you love the ocean, but when you realize why the seas are there in the first place, it starts to make sense. The oceans, with their saltwater, act like a giant cleansing system for our planet. They absorb pollutants, break down waste, and even help create the rain we need. But in the new earth, there won’t be any pollution or waste to deal with, so the sea’s purpose will be fulfilled, and we won’t need it anymore. God’s got everything figured out.

Living in God’s Perfect Presence

Now, this new heaven and new earth are going to have a capital city—”the holy city, new Jerusalem”—and let me tell you, it’s going to be something to behold. John describes it coming down out of heaven, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. Imagine the most beautiful bride you’ve ever seen—radiant, stunning, perfect. That’s how John wants us to picture this city. And it’s not just any city. It’s massive—1400 miles wide, long, and high. That’s bigger than some countries! There’s going to be more than enough room for everyone who loves God. But what really makes this city so special is who lives there. Revelation 21:3 tells us that God Himself will live with us. We’ll see Him, hear Him, touch Him—God will be right there with us, and we’ll be with Him forever.

This is the ultimate fulfillment of “God with us.” Throughout the Bible, we see glimpses of God’s presence with His people—whether it’s in the Garden of Eden, the tabernacle, or Jesus walking among us.

But in the new Jerusalem, we’re going to experience God’s presence in a way that we’ve never known before. There will be no more separation, no more wondering if God is near, because He will be with us, and we will be His people, living in His perfect presence forever.

Living in God’s Perfect Peace

And here’s the best part: this place will be full of perfect peace. Revelation 21:4 paints a picture of a world where God “will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore.” Can you imagine that? No more sorrow, no more death, no more pain. Everything that causes us heartache and suffering in this world will be gone. As a pastor, I’ve seen more than my share of grief and sorrow—witnessing the pain of people who have lost loved ones, who are battling illness, who are struggling through life’s hardest moments. But in heaven, there will be none of that. Thomas Moore once said, “Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal,” and that’s exactly what we’ll experience in the new heaven and earth.

John also tells us that sin will be completely wiped out. Revelation 21:27 says, “But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” Imagine a world where everyone is not just good, but perfect—no arguments, no conflicts, no need for forgiveness because there’s nothing to forgive. It’s going to be a world where everything is as it should be, even better than it was in the beginning.

Challenge

So, here’s the challenge: Are you ready for God’s big reveal? Are you living with the hope and anticipation of what’s to come? This isn’t just a fairy tale ending—it’s a promise from God Himself. Jesus took care of our sin problem on the cross, He conquered death with His resurrection, and He’s coming back to make everything new. The best news of all? God wants this to be your story. Through His grace and your faith in Jesus, you can be a part of this amazing future. Don’t just live for today—live with the hope of eternity in your heart.
