Understanding the Origins of Sin and Satan
You know, one of the toughest questions we face as Christians is this: If God created everything good, where did evil come from? How did Satan, who was originally created as a good angel, become the source of so much darkness and sin? It’s a question that has puzzled believers for centuries, and while the Bible doesn’t give us all the details, it does give us some insight into how sin entered the world—and into our lives.
The Birth of Evil in Satan
So, let’s start with the big question: If Satan deceived the fallen angels and humanity, who deceived him? This is where things get tricky. The Bible makes it clear that Satan, who was originally known as Lucifer, became the father of lies because he himself was a liar. Jesus even says in John 8:44 that Satan was a “murderer from the beginning.” But what does that really mean?
Leon Morris, a respected theologian, points out that the word “beginning” in this context can also mean “origin,” as in the basic cause of something. So, when Jesus says that Satan was a murderer from the beginning, He’s saying that Satan is the origin of murder, the first cause of death and deception. This murder isn’t just physical; it’s spiritual, too. Satan led humanity into sin, which brought about both physical death and eternal separation from God. In a way, he became a “man killer,” as Morris puts it, by introducing sin into the world.
But here’s something even more mind-blowing: Satan’s first act of deception likely happened in the spiritual realm, before humanity was even created.
The Bible hints that Satan deceived a group of angels, leading them into rebellion against God. This act of rebellion marked the true origin of evil. Jesus makes it clear that Satan started this cycle of deception and destruction, and it began long before he ever set his sights on humanity.
The Mystery We Can’t Fully Understand
Now, here’s where we hit a wall. How did Satan, who was originally good, turn into the liar and murderer we know today? The Bible doesn’t give us all the answers, and that’s something we have to accept. There’s a mystery here that our human minds just can’t fully grasp. When it comes to these deep questions, Scripture offers us a few verses to remind us that some things are simply beyond our understanding.
Deuteronomy 29:29 tells us, “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.” Psalm 139:6 echoes this by saying, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.” And Romans 11:33-36 praises the depth of God’s wisdom and knowledge, acknowledging that His judgments are unsearchable and His ways beyond our comprehension.
What we do know is this: Sin and rebellion against God are not part of the original design for humanity. Adam and Eve, the first humans, were created in a perfect state. They lived in a perfect environment, the Garden of Eden, where they enjoyed unbroken fellowship with God. There was no shame, no sin, and no separation from God. But all that changed when they chose to believe Satan’s lie over God’s truth. This choice led to the fall, and the world became what Edith Schaeffer describes as “abnormal.” We’ve been living in this “abnormal” state ever since—a world tainted by sin, marred by evil, and in desperate need of redemption.
Understanding Satan’s Strategy Today
So, what does all this mean for us today? It means that we need to be aware of Satan’s tactics, because they haven’t changed since the Garden of Eden. He’s still using deception, still twisting the truth, and still trying to lead us away from God. The more we understand how he operates, the better equipped we’ll be to resist his schemes.
A detailed study of Genesis 3, where the fall of humanity is recorded, can really help us here. In that chapter, we see Satan’s strategy in full swing. He plants doubt in Eve’s mind, questions God’s word, and makes sin look appealing. The same tricks he used on Adam and Eve, he’s using on us today. But here’s the good news: We don’t have to fall for it.
By knowing the truth of God’s word and staying close to Him, we can stand strong against Satan’s lies.
In the end, understanding the origin of evil helps us see the bigger picture. We live in a world where sin and rebellion are present, but they’re not the final word. God’s plan of redemption, which began the moment humanity fell, is still unfolding. Satan may have introduced sin, but Jesus Christ has conquered it. And that’s the hope we hold onto—no matter how dark the world seems, God’s light shines brighter.
