Applying God’s Provision
You know, it’s one thing to hear what God wants you to do, but it’s another thing entirely to actually follow through and do it. That’s the big takeaway from the Passover story in Exodus. God gave the Israelites specific instructions: take a lamb, kill it, and put its blood on the doorposts of your house. Now, this might sound like a strange and gruesome task, but there was no getting around it. If they wanted to be spared from the final plague that would strike Egypt, they had to do exactly as God commanded.
Here’s the kicker: it wasn’t enough just to kill the lamb or even to collect its blood in a bowl. They had to apply the blood on their doorposts. Without that visible sign, they would suffer the same fate as the Egyptians. Think about that for a moment.
It didn’t matter how religious or respectable they were, or even how much they believed in God. Only the blood on the door would protect them.
In the same way, we can’t rely on religious rituals, good deeds, or even our own righteousness to save us. The only thing that can save us is the blood of the Lamb—Jesus Christ. This story is a powerful reminder that faith without action is meaningless. It’s not just about believing in God’s provision; it’s about applying it in our lives.
Imagine being one of those Israelites. Maybe you’re an animal lover, or maybe your kids are crying, “Why do we have to kill the lamb, Dad?” It must have seemed strange, maybe even cruel, but they had to trust that God knew what He was doing. And as we look back, we can see the bigger picture. This moment was a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice—Jesus, our Passover Lamb, who would take away the sins of the world. The blood on the doorposts wasn’t just about that one night in Egypt; it was pointing toward the cross, where Jesus would shed His blood for our redemption. The message is clear: it’s not enough to acknowledge that Jesus died for our sins; we have to apply His sacrifice to our lives by putting our faith in Him. Only then can we experience true freedom.
Experience God’s Freedom: The Power of Passover Today
What happened that night in Egypt was so significant that God told the Israelites to never forget it. He instituted the Passover as a lasting memorial, a yearly reminder of how He delivered them from slavery through the blood of a lamb. This wasn’t just about looking back at what God did; it was about recognizing how that event shaped their identity as a nation. The Passover marked a new beginning for Israel—one that would define them as God’s chosen people, bound together under His covenant. Every time they celebrated the Passover, they remembered not only their physical deliverance but also their spiritual redemption.
When we look at the Passover today, we’re not just studying a historical event; we’re seeing a reflection of what God is doing in our lives right now. Just as the Israelites were saved by the blood of a lamb, we are saved by the blood of Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God. Remember how the Passover lamb had to be flawless? It had to be carefully examined to ensure there were no blemishes. In the same way, Jesus was examined throughout His life—by religious leaders, by Herod, by Pilate—and no fault was found in Him. He was the spotless Lamb, the only one worthy to take away our sins. This isn’t just ancient history; it’s a living truth that still applies to us today. When we place our faith in Jesus, His blood covers our sins, and God sees us as righteous.
That’s the power of the cross, and that’s the freedom we have in Christ.
Now, let’s bring it home. Every one of us is born with sin marking the doorposts of our hearts. But when we accept Jesus as our Savior, His blood covers our sins. When God looks at us, He doesn’t see our failures or shortcomings; He sees the righteousness of Christ. This is why it’s so important to not just know about Jesus but to fully trust in Him, applying His sacrifice to our lives. The only way to experience true freedom—freedom from sin, from fear, from eternal separation from God—is through the blood of Jesus. That’s what Passover teaches us, and that’s what we need to hold on to every single day.
