How God’s Order Impacts Our Lives Today
Have you ever wondered why Genesis describes the creation of the world in six days? Some say it’s because that’s exactly how it happened—literally in six 24-hour periods. Others think it’s a poetic way to help people remember the details. The Hebrew word for “day” (yom) used here can mean an ordinary day like we know it, but it can also refer to a longer, indefinite period. We could get caught up in debates about whether the world was made in a week or over millions of years, but that’s not really the point. What’s more important is what these scriptures are teaching us about who God is and how He operates.
Let’s start by acknowledging that Genesis 1 is unique, which can make it tricky to interpret. People often feel like they have to choose between two extremes: either it’s a literal historical account of creation in six days, or it’s a myth with no connection to reality. But there’s a middle ground here. The New Testament, especially in passages like John 1:3, Hebrews 11:3, and 2 Peter 3:5-7, sees creation as a real historical event. These texts affirm that God created everything through His Word, and that’s the truth we should hold onto. Now, the six-day structure of Genesis 1 might not be about timing as much as it is about teaching us that God is a God of order and purpose.
The exact timeline is less important than understanding that God spoke the universe into being, set everything in its proper place, and called it good.
Here’s where it gets really insightful: Genesis 1 and 2 aren’t just stories about the beginning of the world; they’re revealing the purpose and relationships within creation. Genesis 1 gives us a big-picture view, showing how God set up the main elements of the universe and their relationships—like how the sun, moon, and stars govern time, and how plants and animals reproduce according to their kinds. God repeatedly calls His creation “good” (Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 21, 25), and then He declares everything “very good” in Genesis 1:31. This isn’t because creation meets some standard outside of God. No, God Himself defines what is good and harmonious, and creation reflects that because it was made according to His word.
When we talk about order in creation, it’s about everything having its proper place and function. Think about it like a well-organized kitchen: every utensil, every pot, every ingredient has its spot and its purpose. In God’s creation, order also means rank. God is the ultimate ruler, and humanity has been given a special role as stewards of the rest of creation. This isn’t about power for its own sake, but about reflecting God’s goodness and harmony in how we live and interact with the world around us. When Israel looked back on these creation stories, they were reminded that God is the source of all goodness.
Any disruption or disharmony we see in the world today wasn’t part of God’s original design—it’s a result of sin, not of creation.
Now, here’s something to think about: God didn’t just create the universe and then step back to watch what would happen. He continues to govern it, actively upholding the order He established. The sun, moon, and stars keep time, seasons change, plants and animals reproduce, and humans are called to live in a way that reflects God’s image. This ongoing rule of God is what we call providence. It’s a comforting thought, isn’t it? No matter how chaotic life seems, nothing can thwart God’s ultimate purpose. Even sin doesn’t frustrate His plans. God’s word sustains everything, from the biggest galaxy to the smallest atom, ensuring that everything functions as it should.
The story of creation isn’t just about how the world began; it’s about how the world is meant to be. God’s word established the order of all things, and by that same word, He continues to uphold that order. That means every part of our lives, from the ordinary to the extraordinary, falls under God’s care and direction. We can trust that He’s got everything in control, even when we don’t see the full picture.
Challenge:
As Christians, understanding the order God established in creation helps us see His hand in every aspect of our lives. This isn’t just about looking at the world around us and marveling at its beauty—though we should do that too. It’s about recognizing that everything has a purpose, a place, and a function because God said so. And that includes you and me. Our challenge is to live in a way that reflects this order, embracing our role as stewards of creation and as people made in God’s image. This means making choices that honor God’s design—whether it’s in how we care for the environment, how we treat others, or how we approach our daily responsibilities. The more we align ourselves with God’s order, the more we reflect His goodness and harmony in the world.
