John 10:31-39 (ESV):
The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.” Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be broken—do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.
Meditation
In this passage, we witness a moment of intense confrontation between Jesus and the Jewish leaders. Jesus’ words in John 10:31-39 are not just a response to accusations of blasphemy but a profound revelation of His divine identity and unity with the Father. When Jesus boldly declares, “I am the Son of God,” He is not merely stating a fact but inviting His listeners—and us—to consider the nature of His relationship with the Father. His works, the miracles, the healings, and the teachings are tangible evidence of this divine connection. Yet, the Jewish leaders, blinded by their rigid understanding of the Law, could not see beyond the human form of Jesus to the divine reality that He embodied.
The tension in this passage reflects the broader struggle between belief and unbelief, a struggle that resonates deeply with us today.
How often do we find ourselves doubting the presence of God in our lives, even when evidence of His goodness surrounds us?
Jesus’ challenge to His accusers is the same challenge He presents to us: “If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works.” Here, Jesus invites us to look beyond our doubts and fears, to see the works of God in our lives as a testimony of His love and power. This insight encourages us to trust in His divine presence, even when our understanding falls short. It is an invitation to cultivate a faith that is not merely intellectual but deeply personal, rooted in the lived experience of God’s grace.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
I come before You today with a heart full of gratitude for the works You have done in my life. When I reflect on the miracles, the answered prayers, and the moments of peace that only You could provide, I see Your hand at work in ways that go beyond my understanding. Yet, I also confess that there are times when I doubt, when my faith falters, and I question Your presence. Father, help me to see Your works as undeniable evidence of Your love and faithfulness. Open my eyes to the ways You are moving in my life, even in the mundane and the ordinary. Let my faith be rooted in the reality of Your goodness, as revealed through Your Son, Jesus Christ. I ask this in Jesus’ name, knowing that You are always near, always working for my good, even when I cannot see it.
Lord Jesus,
You stood before those who accused You of blasphemy, declaring with authority that You and the Father are one. I marvel at Your courage, at the way You spoke truth in the face of danger, and how You embodied the love of the Father through every miracle, every word, and every act of compassion. Yet, even as I admire Your strength, I realize how often I shrink back in fear or doubt when faced with challenges in my own life. Jesus, grant me the strength to stand firm in my faith, to trust in Your divine nature, and to believe in the works You continue to do in my life. May my life be a testimony to Your love and grace, as I seek to follow You more closely each day. Help me to see beyond the surface, to recognize Your presence in every situation, and to trust in the truth that You and the Father are one.
Holy Spirit,
I invite You to dwell within me, to guide my thoughts, my words, and my actions as I seek to live out my faith. When doubt creeps in, when fear takes hold, remind me of the works that Jesus performed, not just as historical events but as living proof of God’s power and love. Empower me to live a life that reflects the unity of the Father and the Son, a life that is marked by love, compassion, and truth. Spirit of God, I ask that You fill me with wisdom and understanding, that I may grow in my knowledge of who Jesus is and what He has done for me. Let this knowledge transform my heart and my life, making me more like Christ each day. I surrender to Your leading, trusting that You will continue to reveal the depth of God’s love to me in ways that are personal and transformative.
Thought for the Day
Jesus’ works are a testimony to the unity He shares with the Father. Today, let us reflect on the ways God is at work in our lives, trusting in His presence even when we cannot fully understand His ways.
